Mars Rowel is the prince of the small kingdom of Aritia and the central protagonist of the Fire Emblem original video animation. He is forced to flee his homeland after a surprise invasion by the forces of the dark dragon Medeus and the sorcerer Gharnef, during which his father, King Cornelius, is killed and his beloved sister, Princess Elice, sacrifices herself to allow Mars to escape. Following this tragedy, Mars lives in exile for two years in the friendly island kingdom of Talys, where he is sheltered by King Mostin and his daughter, Princess Shiida. During this time, he struggles with self-doubt and a sense of guilt, often appearing distracted or melancholic as he contemplates his inability to save his family or reclaim his throne. Despite these inner conflicts, Mars is fundamentally kindhearted, idealistic, and compassionate, preferring peaceful solutions over unnecessary violence. Mars’s most significant relationship is with Princess Shiida, who becomes his closest confidante and a source of emotional support. Her unwavering belief in him helps him overcome his hesitation. He also relies on his aging but devoted retainer Jagen, as well as loyal knights such as Cain and Abel. The memory of his sister, Elice, serves as his emotional anchor; she gave him her golden circlet before their separation, which he wears as a keepsake and symbol of hope. Over the course of the two-episode OVA, Mars begins to transform from a guilt-ridden exile into a resolute commander, gaining confidence as he sees the faith others place in him. In terms of abilities, Mars is a skilled swordsman, wielding the legendary blade Falchion, a weapon forged to combat dragons. He also shows tactical awareness by coordinating with his small army during skirmishes.
