Description
Doris, whose full name is Doris Lang, is a central character from the first story in the Vampire Hunter D series, serving as the primary catalyst for the plot. She is a young woman, approximately seventeen or eighteen years old, who lives on the Frontier, a harsh, post-apocalyptic wasteland where survival is a daily struggle. Doris resides on a farm on the outskirts of the village of Ransylva with her younger brother, Dan, having taken on the immense responsibility of running the household and maintaining the farm after the death of their father, a former werewolf hunter. Her life is one of hard labor and constant vigilance against the many monsters, mutants, and outlaws that plague the Frontier.

In terms of personality, Doris is defined by her fierce independence, resilience, and strength of will. Described as a spitfire, she possesses a quick temper and does not hesitate to stand up for herself or her family, even when facing overwhelming odds. This tough exterior, however, masks a more sensitive and caring nature, particularly towards her younger brother Dan, whom she is fiercely protective of. Her life on the Frontier has forced her to mature quickly, leaving her little time for vulnerability, which she tends to hide beneath a capable and determined front. She is notably distrustful of most men, as she has frequently been a target of unwanted advances or seen as a commodity to be used by figures such as the arrogant mayor's son, Greco Rohman. This has made her cautious and quick to assert her own agency.

Doris's primary motivation throughout the story is her own survival and the safety of her family. Her ordeal begins when she is attacked and bitten by the powerful vampire noble, Count Magnus Lee, who intends to make her his bride. Knowing that the bite will eventually transform her into a vampire or a mindless thrall, she desperately seeks out a way to save herself and prevent the Count from coming for her. This desperation leads her to hire the enigmatic and mysterious vampire hunter known only as D. Her role in the story is therefore that of the client, the initial victim whose plight sets the hero on his path. She represents the struggle of ordinary humanity against the overwhelming power of the Nobility, the vampire aristocracy.

Her key relationships heavily influence her character. The most significant is with her brother, Dan. Her dedication to him is her primary driving force, and the thought of leaving him alone to fend for himself is a source of constant concern. Her relationship with D is complex and forms the emotional core of the story. Despite his cold and reserved demeanor, she is drawn to him, both as her savior and as a man. She sees beyond his frightening dhampir nature and comes to trust him implicitly, even developing romantic feelings for him. This tests D's own internal struggle with his vampiric blood. Her interactions with the Count and his minions, including Rei-Ginsei and the werewolf Garou, constantly put her in the role of a pursued target, though she refuses to be a purely passive victim.

Throughout her story, Doris demonstrates notable abilities that make her more formidable than the average Frontier dweller. She is highly skilled in combat, having been trained by her father in the use of weapons, particularly a whip made from werewolf bristles and a laser rifle. Her initial introduction shows her fearlessly hunting a monster on her own, proving her courage and capability. Her most impressive trait, however, is her mental fortitude. After being bitten by Count Lee, a vampire of considerable age and power, she is able to resist his hypnotic influence to a surprising degree, something that even D acknowledges as remarkable. This suggests a deep-seated strength and stubbornness that defines her character. She is also described as being exceptionally beautiful, a trait that is both a blessing and a curse, as it brings her to the attention of powerful and predatory men like the Count.
