Description
Honey Kisaragi is the central figure of New Cutey Honey, a sequel original video animation set one hundred years after the events of the original 1973 series. Chronologically over a century old, Honey is an advanced android who physically appears to be a young adult woman, possessing a tall and athletic physique. She was originally a human girl whose mind and memories were transferred into an artificial body created by her father, Dr. Kisaragi, following a fatal accident. This android body houses a sophisticated device, sometimes called the Airborne Element Fixing Device or I-System, which allows her to manipulate matter and restructure her appearance at will.
Her personality remains one of her most defining traits. Honey is generally carefree, friendly, and possesses a strong sense of justice, though she can also be mischievous and playful. This lightheartedness, which once manifested as pulling pranks as a schoolgirl, has matured over the decades but still surfaces in her interactions. Beneath this amiable exterior lies a deep well of emotional strength and vulnerability, particularly concerning those she has lost. The deaths of her father and her close friend Natsuko Aki at the hands of the Panther Claw organization were formative tragedies that drive her to protect others and fight against evil.
At the beginning of New Cutey Honey, Honey has lost her memories of her past battles and is living a quiet life as the secretary to Mayor Light in the crime-ridden Cosplay City. Her role is reactivated when an attack on the mayor triggers the return of her memories, and she once again transforms into the flashy, sword-wielding warrior known as Cutie Honey. Her primary motivation shifts from personal vengeance to a more general, but no less fierce, commitment to protecting her new home and friends from various criminals and monstrous threats.
Key relationships play a central role in her life. She is close with the descendants of the Hayami family, including the elderly and often perverted Danbei Hayami, who has been rebuilt as a cyborg, and his grandson Chokkei. This family provides her with a support system and a home, much like their ancestors did a century prior. During the story, she encounters a young delinquent named Natsuko Aki, a name that consciously echoes that of her deceased best friend. This new Natsuko eventually joins Honey's group, serving as a poignant reminder of her past and a new person to care for in the present. Her primary antagonists in this series include the crime lord Dolmeck and the returning Panther Zora, the ancient leader of Panther Claw who seeks to obtain the power of Honey's device.
In terms of development, New Cutey Honey shows a Honey who is more physically and mentally mature than her earlier incarnation. The story sees her reclaim her heroic identity after a period of amnesiac peace, reaffirming her commitment to justice despite the weight of her long history. She confronts not only new enemies but also the lingering remnants of her past, ultimately accepting her role as a protector across different eras.
Her notable abilities are extensive, all stemming from the device within her. By activating it with the command Honey Flash, she can transform into numerous specialized personas, each with unique weapons and skills. Her primary battle form, Cutie Honey, grants her superhuman strength, speed, and agility, along with weapons like the Silver Fleurette sword and the Honey Boomerang. Other common transformations include Hurricane Honey, a skilled motorcycle rider and pilot, and Misty Honey, a rock singer who uses a microphone as a weapon. This transmutation ability is highly energy-intensive, requiring her to consume large amounts of food, usually in the form of many calories, to replenish her power. Her transformations are often accompanied by a brief moment of nudity before her new costume materializes.
