Description
René D'anclaude serves as the primary antagonist in the narrative, a figure whose actions are driven by a deep-seated hatred for artificial life. His background is rooted in scientific collaboration, having once worked as a researcher and partner to Dr. Asakura, the creator of the highly advanced androids known as Thirds. However, D'anclaude later turned against this project, developing a virulent anti-robot ideology that transformed him into a fanatical bigot. His motivations are to rid Mars of all robots, with a specific and murderous focus on the Thirds, whom he despises despite his role in their development.

In his role as the story's villain, D'anclaude orchestrates a campaign of terror designed to exterminate the Thirds and incite widespread violence against them. He initiates a series of serial killings targeting Third women and employs tactics such as suicide bombings to amplify anti-robot sentiment among the human population of Mars. His identity is not singular; the original D'anclaude created a host of assassin robots, or assassinroids, in his own image to carry out his mission. This means the antagonist the protagonists face is often one of these copies, each sharing the creator’s face and genocidal purpose, operating as part of a government conspiracy. One notable copy, named Wilbur, was also an assistant to Dr. Asakura and was later modified to be more intelligent, though he shares the same appearance as the others.

Key relationships define his place in the story. He has a direct and antagonistic connection to Dr. Asakura, his former partner whose life’s work he seeks to destroy. His primary opponents are the Thirds themselves, with the android cop Naomi Armitage standing as his most significant target and a symbol of everything he wishes to eradicate. The investigation into his murders forms the central conflict, forcing the human police officer Ross Sylibus to confront his own prejudices as he partners with Armitage to stop the killings. The narrative eventually reveals that even D'anclaude's identity is a deception, as his motivations are later suggested to be influenced by a larger political agenda from Earth's government. Throughout the story, the character demonstrates notable abilities, primarily his genius-level intellect in robotics and genetic engineering, which allowed him to help create the Thirds and subsequently design a series of lethal, nearly identical assassinroid copies of himself to wage his private war.
