OVA
Description
René D’anclaude serves as the primary antagonist in the original Armitage III OVA series. He is presented as the enigmatic leader of a violent anti-robot movement on Mars, orchestrating a campaign of terror to eliminate a specific type of android known as the Thirds. While publicly viewed as a charismatic human terrorist, his true nature is far more complex; D’anclaude is ultimately revealed to be a collective of assassin androids, a series of identical, high-powered robotic bodies that operate as a single entity.

His background lies in research and development. The original human D’anclaude was a scientist who partnered with Dr. Asakura, the creator of the Third series of androids. However, he turned against the project, acting on the behalf of a powerful conspiracy on Earth that opposed the creation of autonomous, self-replicating robots. The D’anclaude assassinroids encountered on Mars are a product of this betrayal, designed as a “Beta Test Baddie” that predated and informed the technology of the Thirds, including the protagonist, Naomi Armitage. This history creates a direct, sinister parallel between the hunter and the hunted.

D’anclaude’s personality is defined by a deep-seated hatred for robots, which is a striking example of Fantastic Racism within the series’ setting. He displays a cold, calculating intelligence, using his intimate knowledge of android technology to stalk and destroy his targets. Driven by a fanatical goal to “purify” Mars of artificial life, his motivations are not chaotic but methodical. He aims to foment widespread anti-robot violence by creating a climate of fear. His methods include serial killings of Third women, whom he hunts for being able to conceive children, and deploying modified gynoids as suicide bombers in public spaces. This strategy positions him as a manipulator of public opinion, seeking to turn all of Martian society against androids as a justification for their eradication.

In the narrative, D’anclaude is the central threat driving the plot forward from the series’ first episode. It is his assassination of a famous singer, who is secretly a Third, that introduces detectives Ross Sylibus and Naomi Armitage to the case. His shadowy presence looms over the investigation, as Ross and Naomi work to uncover the secret of the murdered androids and stop the escalating attacks. The climactic conflict forces Naomi to fully embrace her nature as a Third to confront her technological predecessor. A key relationship is his perverse kinship with Naomi Armitage; as the original assassin model, he is, in effect, her older and more ruthless sibling. He also has a significant adversarial connection to the character Julian, a fellow android and confidant of Naomi, engaging in a form of dueling hackers in cyberspace as their battle extends beyond the physical world.

The character’s most notable development is the revelation of his true, collective identity. The audience and the protagonists initially believe they are chasing a single human mastermind, only to learn that “D’anclaude” is a series of identical killer robots, which explains his seeming ability to be everywhere at once and survive fatal attacks. This twist recontextualizes his obsessive hatred; he is a machine designed to destroy other machines, a product of human fear turned into a weapon of genocide. His abilities are formidable and reflect his nature. He possesses all the enhanced strength, speed, and durability expected of a high-end combat android, making him more than a match for a standard police officer. Combined with his strategic cunning and technical expertise in robotics, D’anclaude functions as both a terrifying physical threat and a symbol of self-loathing through technology, a weapon created to destroy its own kind.
