Description
Marie Hudson is the young landlady and housemaid of 221B Baker Street in the anime series Sherlock Hound. Unlike the elderly Mrs. Hudson of the original stories, Marie is a comely woman in her twenties who lives as a widow. Her late husband, Jim, was a pilot killed during a mission, and Marie herself was a former aviator with strong ties to the aviation world. These connections frequently prove useful to Sherlock Hound during his investigations. In the series, she is depicted as a golden retriever, matching the anthropomorphic animal design of the show's characters.

Marie possesses a gentle and amiable demeanor, but she also displays a serenely dignified and level-headed personality, much like Hound's own composure. Despite her soft outward nature, she is remarkably resourceful and skilled in practical ways: she is an expert high-speed driver and a very accurate sharpshooter with a revolver. She can hold her own in dangerous situations and assist directly in cases, rather than remaining a purely domestic figure.

Her role in the story is that of the steady, supportive anchor of the Baker Street household. She manages the lodgings and provides meals, but she also becomes involved in adventures through her piloting background and her courage. Marie serves as a love interest for several main characters: both Hound and Watson show affection for her, and even Professor Moriarty develops a romantic interest. Her primary romantic connection is with Hound, though the series maintains a lighthearted, often comedic treatment of these relationships.

Marie's motivations are rooted in loyalty to her friends and a sense of duty left over from her past. She takes her role as landlady seriously and cares deeply for the well-being of Hound and Watson. Her background as a widow and former pilot gives her a practical, independent streak; she is not merely a passive caretaker but willing to take risks when needed. Her personal development over the series is subtle, as she remains a consistent presence, though an early conceptual idea from Hayao Miyazaki imagined her as a secret mastermind capable of outsmarting both Hound and Moriarty--an idea that was not implemented in the finished series.

Notable abilities include her skill as a pilot, her proficiency with a revolver, and her daring behind the wheel. She is also adept at using her aviation contacts to gather information or secure resources for cases. Marie Hudson stands out as a capable, multifaceted character who combines homemaking with action-oriented competence, making her an integral part of the Sherlock Hound ensemble.
