Description
Kojou Akatsuki is the central character of Strike the Blood, a high school student who lives on the artificial island of Itogami. He was an ordinary teenager until an encounter with the previous Fourth Progenitor, Avrora Florestina, transformed him into the most powerful vampire in existence. His memories of that event have been blocked, leaving him with only fragments of how he inherited his powers. He now carries the title of the Fourth Progenitor, a being thought to exist only in legend, and must navigate the immense responsibilities that come with it.
In his daily life, Kojou appears as a relaxed and somewhat carefree individual. He is intelligent and often sly in his approach to problems, but he also possesses a deep empathy for others and a strong willingness to help those in need. Despite his easygoing exterior, he has a quick temper that surfaces when he is mocked or when his loved ones are threatened. He is fiercely protective of his younger sister, Nagisa Akatsuki, with whom he lives, and he maintains a close friendship with his childhood friend Yuuma Tokoyogi. His motivations are centered on protecting his friends and family, understanding the nature of his new powers, and preserving the normal life he had before his transformation. He often struggles with his dual identity, trying to maintain his humanity while controlling the violent urges of his vampire nature.
Kojou’s role in the story is that of an unlikely hero who becomes a key figure in the political and supernatural conflicts surrounding Itogami Island. As the Fourth Progenitor, he is sought after by various factions who wish to control, use, or destroy him. He is initially a reluctant participant, preferring to avoid violence, but he gradually accepts his position and takes on the duty of defending the island and its inhabitants. His journey forces him to confront powerful enemies, uncover ancient secrets, and build alliances with those who would normally be his adversaries.
His most important relationship is with Yukina Himeragi, a Sword Shaman from the Lion King Agency who is sent to observe him and, if necessary, eliminate him. Over time, she becomes his first and most trusted blood partner, forming a deep symbiotic bond that allows him to access his full power by drinking her blood. Their relationship evolves from professional duty to genuine trust and affection, and Yukina often serves as his moral anchor. Other key figures in his life include Asagi Aiba, his classmate and a brilliant hacker who eventually learns his secret and becomes a crucial ally; Sayaka Kirasaka, another agent of the Lion King Agency who initially opposes him but later becomes a blood partner; Natsuki Minamiya, his homeroom teacher who is secretly a powerful mage and provides guidance; and Motoki Yaze, his best friend who is secretly an observer from another organization. These relationships shape his growth and give him the support he needs to face overwhelming odds.
Throughout the series, Kojou undergoes significant development. He starts as a confused and reluctant vampire, often losing control of his abilities and suffering from intense bloodlust. He gradually learns to master his powers, wakening the twelve legendary familiars that he inherited from Avrora. These familiars, each with unique forms and abilities, require him to consume a blood partner’s blood to be summoned. His most iconic familiar is Regulus Aurum, a massive golden lion. He also becomes more confident and decisive, evolving from a pacifist into a leader who willingly embraces his role as the Fourth Progenitor to protect those he cares about. His journey involves uncovering the truth about Avrora and the origin of his power, which helps him reconcile his past and fully accept his identity.
Kojou’s notable abilities are those of the Fourth Progenitor, making him a vampire of unparalleled power. He possesses superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and durability that surpass ordinary vampires. He can regenerate from injuries. His signature power is the use of his twelve beast-like familiars, each wielding a different elemental or conceptual strength. By entering into a blood pact with a partner, he can draw on their life force to summon these creatures. He also has the capacity to create more blood partners over time, expanding his combat options. His vampire instincts can sometimes trigger uncontrollable thirst, but as he gains control, he learns to use his abilities with precision and restraint. His growth in mastering his familiars and his deeper understanding of his inherited powers are central to his progression as a character.
