Kyoko Jingu, initially known only as Magical Girl, is an ordinary high school student who gained magical abilities after a near-drowning encounter with a mysterious light. This light was later revealed to be Su, the Demon Lord's younger sister, who sought contact with her sibling through a magical girl intermediary. Kyoko embraced this role to save others from misfortune, dedicating herself to collecting and destroying mana crystals that inflict extreme bad luck on human possessors. Her heroic and serious nature drives her mission to absorb the crystals' misfortunes, believing this protects humanity. She undergoes training to withstand the constant accidents and disasters triggered by the crystals she carries, viewing her suffering as necessary to shield others.
Her initial antagonism toward Jahy stems from destroying the Dark Realm's central mana crystal, an act that displaced Jahy to the human world. This conflict persists as both pursue scattered crystal shards with opposing goals: Jahy seeks to restore the Dark Realm, while Kyoko aims to eliminate all crystals to permanently prevent their curse. Their dynamic shifts when Kyoko begins working part-time at Jahy's pub, leading to reluctant cooperation and eventual camaraderie despite ideological differences. This includes moments where Kyoko imagines collaborative scenarios, such as envisioning herself as the folktale hero MomotarÅ with allies.
Kyoko's magical girl transformation alters her appearance, changing her long dark hair to a shorter, lighter style and replacing her school uniform with a distinctive magical girl outfit featuring large ribbons. Her persistence in confronting Jahy results in unintended consequences, like being reported to the police by Jahy's landlady for attempting to confront what appeared to be a child. Kyoko's backstory involved significant misfortune even before becoming a magical girl, contributing to her resilience against the amplified bad luck from the crystals. Her arc culminates in a fragile alliance with Jahy, underpinned by mutual understanding of their respective burdens and goals.
