Description
Kazuomi Wakatake is a sixth-grade elementary school student and a central figure in the story. He is a member of his institute's soccer team, where he plays as the ace striker, a position that contributes to his popularity and his self-assured demeanor. Known for his prideful and attention-grabbing personality, Kazuomi enjoys being the center of attention and can be egocentric and conceited, sometimes looking down on others. He strongly dislikes it when his efforts are not properly recognized. Despite these flaws, he possesses a genuine and strong sense of justice, a trait he inherited from his father.

Kazuomi comes from a well-off family. His father is a lawyer currently working in New York on a business trip, and as a result, Kazuomi lives alone in his large family home, with a maid preparing his meals. A notable personal detail is his allergy to pork, which means all his meals are prepared without it. He is also very concerned with money, and his greatest fear is having his allowance taken away by his parents. An amusing indicator of his personality is that the ringtone on his phone is the sound of a police siren.

Academically, Kazuomi does not excel in any particular subject; his grades are known to fluctuate wildly based on his emotions. This inconsistency has earned him the nickname Wakatake the Wave. Because of his uneven performance, he attends evening cram school classes, where he meets Takakazu Kuroki, Kazunori Uesugi, Kazuhiko Kozuka, and later the series protagonist, Aya Tachibana.

Kazuomi's role as the group's leader is solidified after a specific incident. When his bicycle is stolen, he is determined to resolve the matter on his own without involving the police, largely because he was not permitted to ride it to the institute in the first place and fears the consequences. To recover it, he enlists the help of his friends from cram school. The success of this initial investigation leads the five friends to formally establish the Detective Team KZ, with Kazuomi acting as its leader. He is described as glib and attention-grabbing, yet he relies on his friends and knows he can count on them in any situation, even if he occasionally sulks.

A significant turning point in Kazuomi's development occurs during the transition to middle school. Due to the fluctuation of his grades and his subsequent failure to pass the entrance exams, he ends up attending a public middle school, which separates him from his friends who go on to different institutions. This setback highlights the emotional vulnerability that underpins his confident exterior.

His key relationships are with the other members of Detective Team KZ. He works alongside Aya Tachibana, who serves as the team's language expert, as well as the other three boys he met in cram school. While he may bicker with his teammates, they collaborate by pooling their unique talents to solve modern-day cases. Kazuomi's primary abilities lie in his athleticism as a soccer player and his leadership qualities, which drive the team forward and help focus their combined skills on solving mysteries.
