Description
Akane Segawa, known in the online world as Schwein, is a main character who navigates the contrast between her public image and her private passions. She is a first-year high school student and a member of the Alley Cats guild in the MMORPG Legendary Age. In real life, Akane is a beautiful girl with straight dirty-blonde hair often tied into twin tails, but she is notably short in stature. Her in-game avatar, Schwein, is a tall, spiky-haired male character whose name means pig in German, a fact Akane was initially unaware of.
Akane’s personality is sharply divided between her real-world and online personas. At school, she presents herself as cold, rude, and openly contemptuous of otaku culture, frequently directing harsh words toward her classmate Hideki Nishimura for his open gaming lifestyle. This hostile attitude is a defense mechanism designed to hide her own secret life as a dedicated gamer. She is extremely sensitive about her hobby being exposed and becomes distressed if her secret is at risk of being revealed. In contrast, when playing as Schwein, she adopts a brave, cocky, and confident personality, referring to herself with the self-aggrandizing term ore-sama. Despite her harsh exterior, she genuinely cares for her close friends and is motivated to help them, particularly concerning Ako’s inability to distinguish the game from reality.
Akane’s primary motivation is to protect her reputation as a non-otaku while still enjoying her hobby. She is deeply ashamed of her lifestyle and fears that being identified as a gamer would ruin her school life. This internal conflict drives her actions, as she works hard to keep her two worlds separate. However, she also values the friendships she has formed within her guild and wishes to maintain them, leading to her reluctant participation in the school’s Net Game club.
In the story, Akane serves as a key member of the main group. She is the physical damage-dealing expert of the party, playing as a Sword Dancer who wields a large two-handed sword. Her role is to help the protagonist, Hideki, manage the challenges posed by Ako’s delusional behavior, even as she maintains her tsundere attitude toward him at school. The revelation that the guild members are all from the same school forms a core part of the plot’s foundation.
Her key relationships are with her fellow guild members. She has a complex dynamic with Hideki Nishimura, whom she constantly insults in public but secretly holds a crush on, appreciating his kind and caring nature. She is a close friend and guildmate to Ako Tamaki, whom she wants to help despite finding her behavior troublesome. Her relationship with the wealthy and flashy guild master Kyo Goshoin is marked by friendly disagreement, as Akane is more frugal and disapproves of Kyo’s lavish in-game spending.
Throughout the series, Akane undergoes significant development. She begins as a closeted otaku who vehemently denies her interests, but through her forced involvement in the school club and her interactions with her guild mates, she slowly becomes more comfortable with her identity. She eventually agrees to help recruit new members with similar hobbies, showing a growing acceptance of her otaku side. Her cooking skills are notably poor, a fact that causes her insecurity when compared to other female characters.
Akane’s notable abilities lie within the game. As a level 92 Sword Dancer, she is a high-damage dealer who relies on her attacking power. Her class is later changed to Dragon Knight in the light novel series. In the context of the guild, she fills the role of the powerhouse or big guy, responsible for dealing heavy physical damage to enemies.
