Description
Junko Heki, often called by her affectionate nickname Jun-chan, serves as the chief gunner responsible for firing the main cannon aboard the destroyer Harekaze. Standing at 153 centimeters tall, she is a student of the Yokosuka Girls' Marine High School and hails from Tsu City in Mie Prefecture, with a birthday on February 5th. Her bright and energetic personality is a defining trait, as she approaches her duties and interactions with a lively, spontaneous enthusiasm. A particularly charming and recognizable quirk is her frequent use of playful onomatopoeia, such as Bakyun, in her everyday conversation to mimic the sound of gunfire or to lighten the mood.

At the core of Junkos character is her sensitivity regarding her uncommon family name, Heki, which her peers often struggle to remember. This past experience of being overlooked has made her deeply appreciative of those who make the effort. She feels a strong sense of gratitude and loyalty toward her fellow gunnery crew members Hikari Ogasawara and Michiru Takeda, as well as the ships captain, Akeno Misaki, all of whom learned her name quickly. This early acceptance forged a close bond, and she shares a particularly strong friendship with Hikari, often spending her free time together with her and Michiru.

Junkos role on the Harekaze is critical, as her precision with the main gun directly impacts the ships combat effectiveness. This skill is supported by her notable academic proficiency in physics, mathematics, fluid mechanics, geology, and meteorology, all of which she applies to calculate ballistic trajectories. Conversely, she has a declared weakness for chemistry, which she tends to avoid. Her competence extends to holding a certification as a responsible officer for handling and producing explosives, showcasing a serious and professional side to her character. To hone her targeting abilities and better understand projectile motion, she practices the hobby of ring toss, applying physical principles in a fun, practical way.

Beyond her technical skills, Junko possesses a fertile and creative imagination, often indulging in dramatic, fictional scenarios about her friends relationships, a trait she shares with the ships log keeper. Her personality is filled with other distinctive preferences; she favors the taste of deer meat and the color light green, while broccoli stands as a notable dislike. Through her journey aboard the ship, Junko develops from someone who felt insecure about being recognized into a valued, reliable, and loyal member of the crew, contributing her expertise in gunnery and her joyful presence in equal measure.
