Description
Hideko Yamashita, affectionately known by her nickname Shu-chan, is a student at the Yokosuka Girls' Marine High School and serves as a crew member on the training ship Harukaze. She was born on December 13 in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, where her family runs a dry cleaning business. Her height is 145 centimeters and her blood type is A.

Her journey toward a maritime career began with an unusual inspiration. During a public exhibition, she saw the signal flags on a ship fluttering in the wind. The sight reminded her of laundry hanging out to dry, a familiar image from her family's business, and this moment sparked her curiosity about the sea and led her to pursue joining the Blue Mermaids. She is a certified professional cleaner, a skill inherited from her family background.

Shu-chan holds the position of port navigation control officer on the Harukaze, with specific responsibility for supervising safety on the port side of the vessel. In this role, she is dedicated to the careful coordination of operations and the security of the crew.

Her personality is defined by an extreme degree of caution. Her favorite saying, It is better to strike a stone bridge before crossing it, perfectly captures her philosophy of carefully verifying any situation before taking action. She is known for being serious, diligent, and reliable, approaching her studies with great dedication during her free time. Despite her reserved and cautious exterior, she possesses a surprisingly athletic and sporty nature.

Academically, her strongest subject is political economy, but she struggles with mathematics. To overcome this weakness, she regularly seeks help and studies math together with her crewmates Ritsuko Matsunaga and Kayoko Himeji from the gunnery department. Her most notable interpersonal ability is being a fantastic listener. Many of her classmates come to her to confide their problems, often revealing more than they intended because of her patient and non-judgmental nature. She is a trusted confidante for many members of the crew. In her leisure time, she is frequently seen hanging out with two friends, Satoko Katsuta and Mayumi Uchida.

Her quiet and prudent demeanor makes her an indispensable and reassuring presence within the group, as she combines a sharp sense of attentiveness with a steady and reliable commitment to her duties and her friends. She prefers simple foods like yudofu (tofu hot pot) and avoids suppon (softshell turtle).
