TV-Series
Description
Itsuki Tachibana is the central protagonist of the series. He is a second-year student at the suburban Seiga Academy, where he leads a life defined by quiet capability and a lack of personal direction. Before the events of the story, Itsuki has no clear goals for his future, a fact that stands in stark contrast to his remarkable adaptability and competence. His fellow students have nicknamed him the master sub because he possesses the versatile skills to fill in for any absent member of the school's various clubs, demonstrating his willingness to help others and his ability to perform adequately in almost any discipline.

Personality-wise, Itsuki is presented as an amiable, humble, and diligent young man with a friendly disposition. He maintains good grades, perfect attendance, and a helpful attitude, making him a reliable presence within the school. However, this surface-level perfection masks a deeper sense of aimlessness; his life is characterized by a lack of strong personal passions or definitive ambitions. He is not particularly drawn to video games, even as the online world of Phantasy Star Online 2 becomes a cultural phenomenon among his peers. This neutral but capable stance is what catches the attention of the powerful student council president, Rina Izumi, who appoints him as the council's vice-president. Her mandate is for him to play PSO2 and produce reports demonstrating that the game does not negatively affect a student's academic or social life.

Itsukis initial motivation for playing PSO2 is purely a matter of duty rather than genuine interest. He enters the game as an inexperienced novice, creating an avatar that is a simple, direct reflection of his real-world self. This stands in contrast to many other players, who use the game as an outlet for creative roleplaying. Despite his clumsy start, Itsuki applies his characteristic diligence to learning the games mechanics. Through this process, his role in the story evolves from a reluctant reporter to an active participant when the virtual world begins to merge with reality. He discovers that monsters called Darkers can manifest in the real world and that he possesses a rare ability to generate Photon energy, allowing him to combat these threats directly.

This discovery forces Itsuki to adapt to a difficult double life. By day, he fulfills his student council responsibilities, helping to organize major events like the school festival. By night, he battles dangerous creatures, risking his life as a fighter for the interstellar organization ARKS, to which the game is a front. This dual existence gradually takes a physical and mental toll, leading to exhaustion as he struggles to balance the escalating dangers of his secret mission with the mundane pressures of school life and examinations.

Key relationships are the primary drivers of Itsukis development and motivation. His connection with Rina Izumi, his senior on the student council, is central. She is the one who introduces him to PSO2 and is secretly the legendary solo player SORO, who becomes his in-game mentor. Their relationship evolves from a formal, student council hierarchy into a partnership built on mutual trust and shared secrets, with hints of a deeper, unspoken romantic tension. This bond becomes his strongest motivation when Rina is captured by the primary antagonist, Dark Falz, driving the climax of the story.

Another pivotal relationship is with Aika Suzuki, a mysterious transfer student who is secretly an operative from the Oracle fleet. Initially, Aika shadows Itsuki to monitor his development, which creates misunderstandings and jealousy, particularly from Rina. However, she becomes his crucial ally, revealing the true nature of PSO2 and guiding him as he awakens to his Photon abilities. His friendship with his upbeat and athletic best friend, Kouta Kayano, also provides a grounding presence, reminding him of the simple joy of playing the game with others.

Itsukis character arc is one of awakening purpose. He begins as a passive student, content to drift through his days without a goal. The arrival of the student councils request, the mystery of the game, and the real-world danger of the Darkers force him to confront his own potential. He is not a chosen hero in the traditional sense but rather an ordinary person who discovers an extraordinary capacity for courage and self-sacrifice. His journey culminates in a decisive act of heroism, where he willingly enters the body of Dark Falz to rescue Rina, proving that he has found a cause worth fighting for. Through this experience, he transitions from a master sub, always filling in for others, into a true protagonist of his own story.

In terms of abilities, Itsuki is distinguished by his latent capacity to control Photons, the fundamental energy source of the Phantasy Star Online universe. This ability is rare among inhabitants of Earth. It allows him to summon a Photon weapon, such as an energy sword, to defend himself against Darkers that appear in the real world. More prominently, he can undergo a Photon transformation, changing his appearance to a more powerful, blue-haired form that closely resembles his in-game avatar. In this state, he is able to fight on equal terms with the monsters that threaten both the virtual world of Oracle and the real world of his high school. This power is initially uncontrollable and manifests in moments of extreme danger, but through training and Aikas guidance, he learns to wield it as a formidable weapon in his struggle to protect his friends and his everyday life.
