Description
Fujiwara no Yasusuke is a character from the Heian period setting of the series. Born into the prestigious Fujiwara clan, he belongs to a powerful aristocratic family but feels a deep disconnect with the noble sensibilities of his kin. Initially, he serves as a deputy in the Heian-kyo police force, where he becomes a skilled swordsman with a katana and a master archer. His personality at this stage is firm and honorable, distinguished by a genuine soft spot for common people, as he never looks down on those of lower social status.

Yasusuke's fundamental motivations are driven by disillusionment with the aristocracy. He becomes frustrated with the nobility's neglect and exploitation of the common citizenry, as well as the lack of action on crime and the squandering of wealth extracted from the population. A pivotal moment in his life is his relationship with an assistant named Kosode, an ex-convict for whom he develops deep affection. Yasusuke is willing to forgo his noble birthright for her, but she rejects him, believing that throwing away such a valuable status is wrong. The tragic turning point occurs when Kosode is falsely accused of theft, beaten, and subsequently transforms into a Horror, a malevolent entity, killing her tormentors before being slain herself. Overcome with grief and pressure from his obligations, Yasusuke relinquishes his title and name, becoming a thief who steals from the wealthy elite. He takes on the alias Hakamadare, adopting a brash and aggressive personality that is openly disdainful of the aristocracy, a stark contrast to his former honorable demeanor.

In his role as Hakamadare, Yasusuke leads a group of bandits. His exploits eventually draw the attention of a distant relative named Tokitada, who had also rejected aristocratic life. Tokitada and a magical talking skull companion named Goruba, a Madōgu, recruit Yasusuke and train him as a Makai Knight, a demon world knight who battles Horrors. Overcoming initial reluctance and undergoing rigorous training to handle Soul Metal, Yasusuke inherits the title and silver armor of the White Lotus Knight, known as Zanga. This event marks his transition from a common outlaw to a key player in the supernatural defense of the capital. His primary weapon is a Makai Blade that transforms from a dormant katana into an active scimitar, and he is constantly partnered with Goruba.

A key relationship is with his older brother, Fujiwara no Yasumasa, a skilled swordsman devoted to justice who serves as one of the imperial regent Michinaga's Four Heavenly Kings. Yasumasa is aware of Yasusuke's identity as Hakamadare and is dedicated to capturing him, yet he seems impressed by his brother's willpower. This fraternal conflict is tragically cut short when Yasumasa is slain by their ally Seimei while she is under the control of the apocalyptic Horror Rudra, an event that fuels Yasusuke's vow for revenge. He also comes to fight alongside Raikou, the Golden Knight Garo, and the priestess Seimei. Despite a complicated start, with Raikou and Yasusuke recognizing each other from earlier encounters, they become allies in the fight against Horrors.

Throughout the story, Yasusuke undergoes significant development from a frustrated aristocrat and lovesick official to a vengeful outlaw, and finally to a disciplined Makai Knight who embraces a destiny beyond his original life. He evolves from rejecting his lineage to forging a new identity as a protector. His notable abilities as Zanga include enhanced combat skills allowing him to face powerful Horrors. He can manipulate energy, create glyphs that serve as aerial platforms, and utilize purifying fire manipulation through the Madou flame sphere. His fighting style integrates his earlier police and archery training for versatile combat, and he wields a scimitar with extended melee range. In critical battles, such as the confrontation with the Horror Rudra, Yasusuke plays a decisive role, intervening to save his allies and helping to prevent the destruction of the capital.
