Description
Akito Shukuri is an eighteen-year-old young man who initially presents as a foul-mouthed, hot-tempered delinquent with a hostile and aggressive demeanor. He often appears to be in a bad mood and has a strong dislike for being made a fool of or looked down upon. However, this rough exterior masks a far more complex and caring individual. Despite his brusque attitude, he is a reliable and powerful young man who possesses a surprising gentle and optimistic core. He is the primary cook aboard the Norn, and his culinary skills are highly praised by everyone for having a comforting "mother's taste". This domesticity contrasts sharply with his tough image, as do his unusual quirks, which include a profound fear of birds.
Born as Akito Ichinose, his true identity is the older brother of fellow passenger Senri Ichinose. This fraternal bond is the central driving force behind nearly all of his actions and motivations. In their childhood, they lived in a village suffering from a severe water shortage. The villagers relied on Senri's ability to manipulate water, but the frail boy would collapse each time he used his power. To protect his younger brother, Akito would frequently take Senri and run away into the forest, preventing him from being used as the village's resource. In a desperate bid to free Senri from this burden, Akito sought out a being named Aion and learned to perform an "ability transfer," taking half of Senri's water-manipulating power for himself. However, as Akito was not a natural-born ability user, this transfer placed a significant physical strain on his body, causing his body temperature to drop as a side effect.
The villagers, angered by Akito's interference, hired a father-daughter team of memory-manipulating ability users. The daughter was a young girl named Nanami Shiranui, who was forced by her father to erase Senri's memories of his brother. After this traumatic event, Akito was chased out of the village, leaving him with a deep-seated resentment and hatred for Nanami, whom he blamed for the loss of his brother. This past grievance defines his initial relationship with Nanami when they are brought together on the Norn. He is cold, cruel, and verbally abusive towards her, much to the confusion of the other passengers. His primary motivation for being on the ship is to finish what he started: to absorb all of Senri's water ability, thereby granting his brother true freedom from his own power.
Despite his strength, Akito is a deeply vulnerable character, haunted by the past and terrified that Senri will hate him for what happened. This fear manifests as a "brother complex" that becomes a self-imposed chain, preventing him from moving forward. He treats Nanami harshly not only out of anger but also as a way to deflect his own guilt for running away and leaving Senri alone. As he and Nanami are forced to work together, he begins to see past his own hatred. He realizes that Nanami is not a villain but a girl who was also a victim of circumstance, seeking his forgiveness and even wishing for death as a form of atonement. This realization allows his feelings to transform from hatred to love, and Nanami becomes his sole emotional support, the only person who can hold up his fragile psyche. His character development culminates when he finally confesses the truth to Senri and absorbs the remainder of his power, achieving his goal but immediately asking Nanami to erase his brother's memory again, believing himself to be an unworthy, pathetic excuse for a brother. It is Nanami's refusal to commit this act again that ultimately breaks the cycle of guilt and allows Akito to embrace a future with both his brother and his new love.
In terms of abilities, Akito is a pseudo water-manipulator, wielding a power that originally belonged to his brother. He is a capable fighter, though his true strengths lie in his resilience and his will to protect others, even at the cost of his own well-being. His rigorous routine of waking early, exercising, and cooking for the entire ship shows a surprisingly disciplined and structured side to his personality.
