Description
Jie Mei is a spirit guardian intrinsically linked to the Beast Spear, the legendary weapon central to the conflict of Ushio & Tora. Her history is deeply tragic and forms the foundation for the spear's power and the curse it carries. She was originally a human girl living approximately 2,200 years ago in a village outside the castle walls, the daughter of a court priest and swordsmith who had fallen from grace. After the monstrous Hakumen no Mono attacked her family and slaughtered her parents, a desperate plan was devised to forge a weapon strong enough to fight back. When the only method left was a human sacrifice, Jie Mei willingly offered her own body, blood, and soul to the flames of the forge, becoming the living core of the Beast Spear's blade. Her brother, Giryō, also sacrificed himself to become the spear's shaft, with both of their souls bound to the weapon for eternity.
As a spirit, Jie Mei exists primarily within the darkness of the Beast Spear, serving as a guardian of the weapon and of the soul of her brother, which is also trapped within it. She is also one of the Oyakume, the chosen shamans who maintain the barrier that holds Hakumen no Mono sealed. From this ethereal state, she has the ability to freely materialize anywhere she is needed, appearing as a beautiful ghostly figure. Her personality is defined by her profound sacrifice and her unwavering will to oppose Hakumen no Mono. Even after millennia as a spirit, she retains a deep sense of compassion and a desire to protect others, directly intervening to help Ushio Aotsuki when the Beast Spear threatens to completely absorb his soul and turn him into a mindless beast.
Jie Mei’s role in the story is that of a spiritual guide and a keystone figure linking the past to the present. She is an ancestor of Ushio, often identified as his great-grandmother, and her reincarnation as a woman named Yuki began the lineage of powerful female shamans who all bear a striking resemblance to her. This explains why Mayuko Inoue, a modern-day character, looks so much like Jie Mei, as she is a descendant of this line. When Ushio travels back in time, he meets Jie Mei as a living girl, forging a direct bond with her and becoming the very person she and her brother hoped would one day wield the spear they became. Her most critical intervention in the present day occurs when Ushio is on the verge of being fully overtaken by the spear. Jie Mei assembles all the girls whose lives Ushio had previously saved, instructing them to use a special comb on his hair to restore his soul, a process guided by her wisdom and care. Through this act, she reveals that the malevolent force trying to consume Ushio is actually her own tormented brother, and she pleads with him to stop, demonstrating her enduring love for her family and the tragic consequences of their shared sacrifice. Her development is revealed through the tragic arc of her mortal life, her selfless choice to become a weapon, and her subsequent millennia-long existence as a spirit, where she continues to work from the shadows to finally end the threat of Hakumen no Mono by aiding the one who wields the spear she became.
