Description
Guren is a formidable antagonist who appears as a monstrous, black-furred entity bearing a striking and menacing resemblance to the central character Tora. His origins are deeply tragic and dark, revealing that he was not always a beast. Before his transformation, he was a human man named Soukei, a vicious and black-hearted thief who rampaged across Japan murdering countless innocent people for his own pleasure and profit. Approximately 1700 years before the main events of the story, Soukei discovered the legendary Beast Spear, an object of immense power that eventually consumes the soul of its wielder. Unlike others who may have used the spear for noble purposes, Soukei embraced its power to continue his killing spree, relishing the thrill of murder until his humanity was completely devoured, leaving behind the monstrous being known as Guren.

Guren's personality is defined by an absolute and unquenchable love for slaughter and cruelty. As a human, he was already a merciless murderer, and his transformation into a monster only stripped away the last vestiges of his humanity, allowing his bloodlust to flourish without any moral restraint. He is a sadistic and cold-blooded being who has spent centuries hunting and devouring humans, including men, women, and children, simply for the enjoyment of it. His actions are driven not by any grand ideology or survival instinct, but by a pure, self-serving desire to kill. This fundamental nature sets him apart from his fellow Azafuse. While most former Beast Spear wielders are driven by an instinctual, seething hatred for the story's primary antagonist, Hakumen no Mono, Guren completely ignored that calling. Instead, he chose to serve Hakumen, who promised him greater power and the freedom to continue his massacres without restraint.

In the overarching narrative, Guren serves as a significant threat and a personal nemesis to the exorcist Hyou. He was the one who callously slaughtered Hyou's wife and daughter, an act that set Hyou on a centuries-long path of vengeance. Their conflict is a central personal struggle interwoven with the final battle against Hakumen no Mono. Guren also acts as a high-ranking lieutenant to Hakumen, commanding legions of lesser monsters and often appearing to sow chaos. His connection to the Beast Spear also makes him a dark parallel to both Tora and the protagonist Ushio, as all three are or were wielders of the same cursed weapon. Guren represents a potential dark future for Ushio, showing the monstrous end result of being fully consumed by the spear's power. He also possesses the ability to generate Kokuen, powerful shadowy creatures born from his own body that serve as his soldiers.

Regarding his relationships, Guren's most significant link is his mutual, burning hatred with Hyou. While Guren has forgotten most of his human past, he remembers Hyou and the family he murdered, viewing the exorcist as a persistent nuisance or a target he failed to eliminate. He also has a notable but antagonistic relationship with Tora. As fellow Azafuse, they share a common origin as former spear wielders, but their paths diverged completely. While Tora harbors a personal, deep-seated grudge against Hakumen, Guren willingly embraces him as a master, making them natural foes. Guren looks down on Tora, seeing him as a fool for not accepting the power and freedom that comes from serving the ultimate evil. Despite losing his human memories, Guren's core sadistic personality never changed, and he showed no remorse for even his most horrific acts, such as taking a woman and child hostage during his final duel with Hyou, knowing it would remind his enemy of his own lost family.

In terms of his development, Guren is a static character who primarily serves as a catalyst for the growth of others, particularly Hyou. He has long since passed the point of no return, fully embracing his nature as a monster. While he is fiercely powerful, his arrogance and singular focus on killing can be exploited. In key confrontations, he is shown to be a formidable physical combatant, capable of overwhelming even powerful exorcists and other youkai. He received additional power from Hakumen no Mono, which granted him abilities like creating his Kokuen children and making him even more deadly. His story arc concludes in a violent, decisive battle against Hyou, where his reign of terror finally meets its end, allowing his nemesis to achieve his long-sought vengeance.
