Description
Giryo is a pivotal character from the anime Ushio & Tora, whose origins are deeply intertwined with the central weapon of the story, the Beast Spear. He first appears during a critical arc where the protagonist, Ushio Aotsuki, travels back in time to understand the spear's origin.
Living in ancient China 2290 years before the main story, Giryo was the son of a master blacksmith. He lived with his parents and his younger sister, Jiemei. Their family was not wealthy but shared a warm and happy life. The king, fearing the monstrous Hakumen no Mono, ordered the creation of a sword powerful enough to defeat it. To meet this demand, Giryo recalled a forbidden dark smelting technique taught by his master. This method was considered inhuman, as it involved offering a living person to the molten iron to create an unparalleled weapon.
Before any such sacrifice could be made, tragedy struck. The demon Hakumen no Mono attacked, effortlessly destroying the newly forged sword, brutally killing Giryo's father and mother, and turning the capital into a sea of fire. Overwhelmed with grief and guilt for surviving when he could not help, Giryo despaired, feeling that his own hands were useless. His younger sister, Jiemei, who had overheard him speaking of the dark forging method, made a fateful decision. She threw herself into the furnace, becoming the sacrifice necessary to create a new weapon.
Jiemei's sacrifice forged the blade of the Beast Spear. In that moment of ultimate loss, Giryo's own body transformed. He became the shaft of the spear, pouring every ounce of his hatred and desire for revenge against Hakumen no Mono into the weapon. His humanity was consumed by his vengeance, turning him into a demon-like existence. He vowed that until Hakumen no Mono was killed, he would reside within the spear.
Giryo’s personality is defined by a tragic mixture of profound sorrow and overwhelming, relentless hatred. Before his family's death, he was a dedicated and loving son and brother, eager to restore his family's name. The trauma of losing his parents and witnessing his sister’s voluntary sacrifice broke him, transforming his feelings of helplessness into a singular, burning purpose: revenge. He feels immense guilt, believing his own weakness and his suggestion of the dark arts led to his family's doom. This guilt solidifies into a vow to become a demon of vengeance, his sole motivation for existence becoming the destruction of the white-faced demon.
Within the story, Giryo is not a character who physically acts alongside Ushio. Instead, he is the will and consciousness of the Beast Spear itself. His role is that of the ultimate weapon, a force of nature driven by a millennia-old grudge. However, his hatred is so potent that it can overwhelm the wielder’s mind, attempting to consume them with his own thirst for revenge. For centuries, the spear devoured the souls of its owners, turning them into nameless yokai known as Azafuse, all in a futile attempt to find a host strong enough to carry out its mission. This endless cycle of hatred is later mourned by other characters who come to understand Giryo's tragic fate.
His key relationship is with his sister, Jiemei, whose soul resides in the blade of the spear, while his is in the shaft. Their souls are eternally bound together within the weapon. Another critical relationship is with Ushio Aotsuki. Ushio encountered Giryo in the past and was a witness to his family's tragedy. Unlike the spear's previous owners, Ushio is the first to show Giryo compassion, attempting to stop him from harming himself in his grief. Ushio is also descended from Jiemei's reincarnation, creating a profound spiritual connection that allows him to wield the Beast Spear more effectively than others while resisting being completely consumed by its hatred. The bond between Ushio and the spear is one of mutual dependence, with Ushio giving Giryo a chance at true vengeance and Giryo granting Ushio immense power.
Giryo's development is more of a tragic, static arc. He does not grow as a person; he is frozen in the moment of his sister's sacrifice, driven solely by revenge. However, his influence on the story evolves. For over two thousand years, the Beast Spear was a rampaging calamity, sealed away by a coalition of yokai who wove themselves into a red cloth to restrain its power. When Ushio finally calls upon him, Giryo acknowledges the boy, stating that he will answer his call "ten million times" until Hakumen no Mono is destroyed. Through Ushio, Giryo finds a purpose beyond mindless rampage: a focused, cooperative path toward his ancient goal.
In terms of abilities, Giryo himself is the Beast Spear. As such, he possesses the power to harm and kill immensely powerful yokai, including Hakumen no Mono, a feat beyond most other weapons and creatures. The spear can move of its own accord, fly through the air, and unleash devastating force. The spear's power is controlled by the red cloth tied to it, which acts as a limiter. The sheer hatred and willpower of Giryo are what give the spear its strength, but this also makes it incredibly dangerous for those who wield it, as they risk being consumed and transformed into an Azafuse. The legend of the Beast Spear is ultimately the legend of Giryo's despair and his undying oath of vengeance.
