Description
Hyō is a powerful Chinese exorcist who enters the story driven by a singular and devastating purpose: revenge. He is a formidable and dangerous figure, distinguished by the three long claw marks that scar his face from his right eye down to his jaw. Where his right eye once was, a magical blue crystal ball has been set, a replacement that saved his life but also serves as a constant reminder of his traumatic past.

Fifteen years before the events of the series, Hyō’s wife and young daughter were brutally murdered by a monstrous, tiger-like yōkai. In the same attack, his right eye was destroyed and his face was disfigured, leaving him with the distinctive scars that mark his fury. This tragedy consumed his entire being, transforming the former family man into a grim and relentless hunter. From that day forward, his entire existence was dedicated to a single goal: finding and destroying the demon that took everything from him.

In his quest for vengeance, Hyō became a highly skilled exorcist, mastering techniques of geomancy and the use of spiritual seals and flying spears. He is a cold-blooded and efficient killer of yōkai, capable of annihilating monsters with excessive brutality. This moral ambiguity makes him stand in stark contrast to the series’ protagonist, Ushio Aotsuki, who often seeks to understand or show mercy to the beings he fights. Hyō is a living example of how the hunt for monsters can make a person monstrous as well, operating in a grey area where the ends of extermination justify the means, even if those means include harming humans.

Hyō’s path crosses with Ushio and Tora when he sees the tiger demon on television and immediately believes Tora is the same monster that killed his family. Upon confronting them, Hyō proves to be more than a match for Tora in battle, and Ushio, frustrated by Tora’s constant attempts on his own life, momentarily agrees to let Hyō kill him. However, Ushio’s innate sense of justice quickly returns when he realizes Tora is innocent of this specific crime. Ushio intervenes in the fight, not only to protect Tora but also to prevent Hyō from descending further into darkness by killing the wrong target. This moment is a turning point for Hyō; Ushio’s willingness to stand against him, despite their earlier agreement, forces him to reconsider his blind rage.

After this confrontation, Hyō becomes a reluctant but valued ally to Ushio. He calms down and joins the fight against the greater evils they face together. His role shifts from an antagonist driven by personal vengeance to a powerful comrade who lends his considerable exorcist skills to the cause. In the end, Hyō meets his fate after finally locating and killing Guren, the true demon responsible for the murder of his wife and daughter. He dies a hero while defending a mother and her child, concluding his arc not as a man consumed by revenge, but as a protector, giving his life to ensure another family would not suffer the same loss he did.

As an exorcist, Hyō’s abilities are formidable. Beyond his immense physical strength, which allowed him to fight on par with Tora for an entire day, he is a master of spiritual arts. He utilizes geomantic principles and can deploy magical formulas and flying spears as weapons. The mystical orb in his eye socket grants him additional, unspecified powers, including a form of hypnosis. His entire fighting style is aggressive, brutal, and efficient, reflecting the single-minded purpose that drives him.
