Description
Kyōji Atsuzawa is a supporting character in Ushio & Tora. He is a pilot in the Japan Self-Defense Force, holding the rank of second lieutenant. He was formerly a subordinate and friend of Yuu Hiyama’s father, who was a commercial airline pilot. During a flight, a sky demon known as Fusuma attacked the aircraft and killed Yuu’s father while Atsuzawa watched, powerless to intervene. This traumatic event left Atsuzawa with a deep sense of guilt and responsibility toward Yuu, as he believed he had failed to protect her father. He subsequently took it upon himself to watch over Yuu, trying to make amends for what he could not prevent.

Atsuzawa’s motivations are rooted in this guilt and his desire to protect Yuu. He appears again when Yuu, Ushio, and Tora are on a flight that comes under attack by the same type of sky demon. Throughout the encounter, Atsuzawa is initially burdened by his past failure, but he cooperates with Ushio and Tora to confront the threat. After Ushio and Tora defeat the sky demon, Yuu confronts Atsuzawa and apologizes for having previously blamed him for her father’s death. This moment allows Atsuzawa to find some closure and alleviates his lingering guilt.

In terms of personality, Atsuzawa is portrayed as a responsible and capable pilot who carries a heavy emotional weight. He is serious and professional in his duties, yet shows a softer, more caring side toward Yuu. His role in the story is brief but meaningful, serving as a human character whose past trauma is resolved through Ushio’s actions, and who provides a bridge between the human world and the supernatural conflict.

Atsuzawa does not possess any supernatural abilities; his notable skill is his proficiency as a fighter pilot. He has no further character development beyond his arc with Yuu, and he does not reappear in later storylines. His key relationship is with Yuu Hiyama, with Ushio Aotsuki acting as a catalyst for his emotional resolution.
