Description
Kanade Sakurada is the second daughter of the Sakurada royal family and the fifth of the nine siblings, positioned between her older brother Shu and her younger sisters and brothers. She is the twin sister of Shu Sakurada, being born thirty minutes after him, and both are seventeen years old. Kanade is a second-year middle school student who serves as the vice president of the student council, a position that allows her to exercise significant influence and organizational skills. Because the student council president is often ill, Kanade effectively manages many of the council's duties herself, demonstrating her reliability and leadership abilities.
On the surface, Kanade presents herself as the perfect princess. She is known for her beautiful appearance, kind demeanor, and an ever-present refreshing smile that has made her incredibly popular, especially among the male students at her school. Her friend group consists mainly of elegant, classy girls, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a prestigious girls' academy. However, this flawless public image is largely a carefully constructed facade designed to win the royal election. In truth, Kanade has a much more calculating and pragmatic personality. She is a haraguro character, meaning she thoroughly weighs gains and losses and can be quite cold beneath her charming exterior. She is described as high-strung and pretends to be cool-headed, preferring to maintain only the level of social interaction necessary for her survival and campaign. Despite this calculating nature, she possesses a tsundere temperament, a trait she is said to have inherited from her mother, which occasionally allows her genuine, softer feelings to peek through.
Kanade's motivations are deeply rooted in a traumatic event from her childhood. When she was young, she created a small castle in the park using her powers in an attempt to get the attention of her older sister, Akane. The structure collapsed, and in the ensuing accident, her brother Shu suffered a serious leg injury that ended his dream of becoming a soccer player. He still cannot play sports and is often seen sitting on the bench during gym class. Blaming herself entirely for what happened to Shu, Kanade made a solemn vow to become the next monarch. Her primary goal as queen would be to dedicate the kingdom's substantial resources toward medical research, hoping to find a way to heal her twin brother's leg. This secret, selfless motivation stands in stark contrast to her outward ambition and reveals that her aggressive campaigning is driven by guilt and love rather than simple desire for power. Shu, however, is aware of her plan and actively works to sabotage her election efforts because he wants her to stop dwelling on the past and live her own life freely.
In the context of the story, Kanade is one of the most serious and active candidates in the election to choose the next ruler. She is often seen as a primary rival to the other frontrunners, particularly her sister Aoi. Her role as a family antagonist is complicated by the revelation of her true intentions, which makes her one of the most multifaceted characters. Her key relationships are central to her character arc. Her dynamic with her twin Shu is the most significant, as her entire political ambition is driven by her guilt over his injury and her deep, perhaps more than sibling-like, feelings for him. She also has a strong siscon tendency, caring for her older sister Akane, and once used her power to create an expensive, futuristic shock absorber to save Akane from being hit by a truck. Kanade shares a close friendship with the student council president, Uzuki, whom she often visits in the hospital and whose position she eventually inherits after Uzuki graduates.
Kanade's notable ability is called Heaven's Gate. This power allows her to materialize virtually any object she desires, including things that are purely imaginary or have not yet been invented. However, this creation comes at a direct financial cost: the exact amount of money equivalent to the object's value is automatically deducted from her bank account. She cannot cancel the activation of her power once it has been used, and if her savings are insufficient to cover the cost of the item, she will be forced to pay an even higher price. Due to these prohibitive expenses, Kanade is known to save money on a scale comparable to a national budget. During moments when her powers go out of control, a period known as breakout, she deliberately forces herself to create only small stones to avoid accidentally wasting massive sums of money. Despite her controlled and strategic personality, Kanade has a few notable weaknesses. Her cooking skills are quite poor, and she has a secret, intense fondness for cats, becoming flustered whenever she sees one but having to maintain her composure for the sake of her image. Over the course of the series, Kanade develops from a seemingly untrustworthy and overly ambitious character into one whose primary driving force is her deep-seated sense of responsibility and love for her family.
