TV-Series
Description
Kinji Tōyama is a student at Tokyo Butei High School, a specialized academy that trains armed detectives known as Butei. Officially, he holds the lowest combat rank of E, largely because he missed a crucial final examination. However, his official rank belies his true capabilities, as he was once a prodigy in the Assault department, the school's most dangerous and combat-oriented division, where he held the highest rank of S. At the start of the series, Kinji has transferred to the Inquesta department, which focuses on information gathering, with the personal goal of eventually leaving the academy to live a quiet and ordinary life.
Kinji's personality is defined by a strong desire for normalcy, a trait that constantly conflicts with the extraordinary circumstances he finds himself in. He generally presents himself as cynical and reluctant, particularly regarding his dangerous and unpredictable partner, Aria H. Kanzaki. He wishes to avoid the violence and chaos inherent to Butei work, preferring to stay on the sidelines. This placid exterior, however, masks a deeply ingrained instinct and incredible combat potential that emerges under specific conditions.
The source of Kinji's true power is a unique genetic trait inherited by all members of the Tōyama family, known as Hysteria Mode or Hysteria Savant Syndrome. This state is triggered by sexual arousal, such as being physically close to a girl or kissing, which activates a transformation where his cognitive and physical abilities increase to roughly thirty times their normal level. In this mode, he becomes capable of superhuman feats, including accurately shooting enemy bullets out of the air, swinging a knife at supersonic speeds, and dual-wielding firearms with lethal precision. This transformation also alters his personality, making him suave, seductive, and highly confident, which in turn makes him very attractive to women. Despite his immense power in this state, he suffers from a major weakness: he cannot directly harm women, though he can still fight and restrain them without causing injury. Over the course of the story, his feelings for Aria become so strong that even minor romantic or sexual interactions with her can instantly activate this mode.
In the narrative of Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA, Kinji serves as a supporting character, an experienced senior Butei whose reputation and abilities are well-known to the newer students. His primary role is as the reluctant partner of Aria, a top-ranked S-Range Butei who is a descendant of the famous Sherlock Holmes. Despite his protests, he is frequently dragged into her investigations and battles. His key relationships include his childhood friend, Shirayuki Hotogi, who has deep romantic feelings for him that often manifest as extreme jealousy, and another classmate, Riko Mine, who is aware of his secret abilities. Throughout the series, his bond with Aria deepens from one of mere circumstance to genuine respect and romantic affection, as demonstrated when he kisses her to calm her down, an act that also solidifies the emotional trigger for his Hysteria Mode.
Kinji's notable abilities are intrinsically linked to his Hysteria Mode. His weapon of choice is an illegally modified Beretta 92F that can fire a three-round burst, which he refers to as the Beretta Kinji Model, and he also wields a butterfly knife. Later in his career, he acquires his father's modified Desert Eagle and a double-edged seax that once belonged to Sherlock Holmes. When he enters Hysteria Mode, his proficiency allows him to dual-wield both his pistols and both his bladed weapons simultaneously, earning him the title of Quadra of Mimicry for his skill in combining four weapons at once.
