Description
Black Lizard is a character from the anime series Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace, based on the works of author Edogawa Ranpo. She is introduced as a formidable and unconventional figure imprisoned within a special isolation cell known as Shinjuku Prison, a facility designated for particularly dangerous criminals. Despite her incarceration, she is not a powerless inmate; her cell includes her own personal slaves, underscoring her authority and influence even behind bars.

Her personality is a complex mixture of dominance and masochism. On the surface, she possesses a strong will and carries herself with the haughty demeanor of a queen, making her a very strong-willed and proud individual. However, this exterior masks a deep-seated masochistic nature, as she exhibits a distinct tendency to derive pleasure from being mistreated, particularly by the brilliant detective Akechi. Her interactions with Akechi are a defining feature of her character; his blunt and rude interrogations provoke a strange and excited reaction from her, forming an unusual relationship where she is an abhorrent admirer who craves his harsh treatment.

Regarding her motivations, Black Lizard is primarily driven by her obsessive infatuation with Akechi and her own desires. She willingly provides him with her exceptional information-gathering abilities, not out of altruism, but because she enjoys the abusive dynamic he provides. Her role in the story is that of a recurring informant and a wildcard. While she is a self-proclaimed thief and a criminal, she offers her assistance to Akechi when he finds his investigations at a standstill, serving as an unconventional ally from the underworld. Her intelligence network is first-class, and she holds considerable sway in financial and political circles, making her a valuable resource that Akechi reluctantly uses when necessary. For instance, during a critical confrontation involving the villain Namikoshi, she deployed her own slaves to help stop the followers of Twenty Faces, demonstrating her willingness to act in support of Akechi’s goals.

Her key relationships are primarily with Akechi and, to a lesser extent, with Hashiba. Her connection to Hashiba is a link to her past influence, as she has a prior history with his grandfather. However, her entire world revolves around Akechi, whom she views as a source of perverse pleasure. She also shows a connection to the wider criminal world, acting as a facilitator who can manipulate events from the shadows. In terms of development, Black Lizard remains a relatively static character throughout the series, serving more as a recurring plot device and a source of dark, unconventional comic relief. Her antics, which include a peculiar fetish regarding her bodily functions, are often cited as being at odds with the darker, more subtle tone of Edogawa Ranpo's original aesthetic and have been met with mixed reactions from audiences.

Her notable abilities lie not in physical combat, but in her vast network and intellect. She possesses top-tier intelligence gathering capabilities, allowing her to acquire information that is inaccessible to the police. She also commands significant resources and loyalty, evidenced by the slaves who serve her even in prison and her ability to influence powerful figures in finance and politics. This combination of information, influence, and an unshakable compulsion to involve herself with Akechi makes her a unique and unpredictable force within the narrative.
