Description
Kōta Shinohara is a first-year high school student and a resident of the boarding house known as Kasumi-so, where he occupies room one. He is a slender boy of average height with pale skin, short aquamarine hair, and a long fringe that constantly hides his eyes. Beneath that fringe lies a delicate, feminine face, a feature he is self-conscious about and which contributes to his shy, withdrawn demeanor. His personality is timid and introverted, and he is easily flustered, often becoming the straight man in the chaotic situations created by the eccentric residents of the boarding house and by Kanade Takahashi’s boisterous circle of friends.

Kōta’s primary motivation is his quiet, unrequited love for Kaho Nikaido, a fellow resident of Kasumi-so. He harbors deep feelings for her but lacks the confidence to confess, preferring to nurse his affection from a distance. This romantic longing drives much of his behavior, including his habit of writing poetry, which he uses as a private outlet for his emotions. His friends and acquaintances occasionally tease him for his shyness, calling him a virgin, which only reinforces his insecurities.

In the story, Kōta serves as a supporting character, often providing a grounded, mild-mannered contrast to the more outlandish personalities around him. He is frequently caught in the middle of the surreal and comedic events that unfold at Kasumi-so, especially those involving Kanade–a fifth grader who is Kaho’s love interest–and Kanade’s friends. Kōta’s role is that of a sympathetic, bashful observer who quietly hopes for his own romantic breakthrough.

His key relationships include his one-sided attachment to Kaho Nikaido, his tolerant but strained interactions with the boisterous elementary school boys, and his coexistence with the quirky residents of the boarding house. Over the course of the series, Kōta experiences moments of personal growth as he gradually becomes more open about his feelings and learns to stand his ground, though he remains fundamentally shy and reserved. His most notable ability is his talent for writing heartfelt poetry, which he uses to process his emotions and express his romantic yearnings, even if he rarely shares it aloud.
