Description
Lapis, also known by the name Lapis Lazuli, is a key figure in the world of Anti-Magic Academy. She is a Relic Eater, a rare and sentient magical weapon capable of taking human form. Her true name and form are that of the sword Mistilteinn, a Relic Eater bound to a wielder through a contract. Initially, she appears as a mysterious girl with long purple hair and blue eyes, often seen observing the events around the 35th Test Platoon from the shadows. Her demeanor is reserved and neutral, speaking in a spare, direct manner that projects a sense of detachment from those around her. She carries herself with an air of quiet observation, rarely showing strong emotion unless her partner is in danger.
Lapis’s primary motivation is to fulfill her purpose as a weapon and to maintain the contract with her chosen user. She seeks a partner who can bring out her full potential, and she initially views the bond in purely functional terms. However, her time with Takeru Kusanagi, the captain of the 35th Test Platoon, leads to a gradual shift in her perspective. After Takeru is mortally wounded during a battle with a powerful enemy, Lapis forms a binding contract with him, saving his life. From that point onward, she becomes his constant companion and partner, both in combat and in daily life. She enrolls at the Anti-Magic Academy under the alias Kusanagi Lapis, claiming to be Takeru’s sister as a cover for her presence, and often stays close to him in classes and missions.
In the story, Lapis serves as Takeru’s most essential asset in battle. When she manifests her true form, she becomes a set of Witch Hunter Armor and an indestructible sword that possesses the ability to absorb and nullify magic. This ability is critical against the magical threats the platoon faces, especially since Takeru himself relies on swordsmanship rather than firearms. In her human form, she also provides tactical support and insight, and she is not afraid to engage enemies directly when necessary. Her physical limitations as a humanoid vessel sometimes prevent Takeru from fully displaying his swordsmanship, but the contract allows her to extend his combat endurance and effectiveness.
Key relationships in Lapis’s life revolve almost entirely around Takeru. She develops a genuine care for him as the story progresses, moving beyond a simple tool-user dynamic. Her bond with Takeru is unique in that she was initially designed as a weapon without a will of her own, yet through him she begins to form a distinct personality and emotional attachments. She interacts sparingly with the other members of the 35th Platoon, but she is a reliable presence in their missions. Her development is marked by a growing understanding of human emotions and a deepening loyalty to Takeru, despite the initial single-mindedness of her purpose.
Notably, Lapis possesses the ability to activate a special mode called Witch Hunter, which greatly enhances Takeru’s combat capabilities at critical moments. She also participates in missions that require stealth or subterfuge, such as tailing a suspected traitor. Over the course of the series, she evolves from a detached, almost alien being into a character who values her connection to her partner and the platoon. Her role as a relic weapon with a human heart makes her an integral part of the 35th Test Platoon’s success and a silent yet powerful presence throughout the story.
