Description
Ichirohiku, also known as Ichirōhiko, is a central character from the 2015 anime film The Boy and The Beast. He serves as the primary antagonist and is a figure whose tragic arc is driven by an internal struggle with identity, jealousy, and the corrupting power of a spiritual darkness called the emptiness.

Ichirohiku was originally a human baby abandoned in an alley in a major Japanese city. He was discovered and adopted by Iōzen, a noble beast swordsman who raised him in the Beast Kingdom. Unaware of his true origins for much of his youth, Ichirohiku grew up believing he was a beast, the son of a respected master. This foundational lie planted the seeds of his inner turmoil. As he matured, his physical appearance did not develop the boar-like snout and tusks of his father and younger brother, Jirōmaru. This visible difference led him to question his identity and fostered a deep-seated shame, as he desperately wanted to resemble the beast he idolized.

His personality is initially reserved and dutiful, but it curdles over time into bitterness and arrogance. He hero-worships his adoptive father and trains rigorously in martial arts to earn his approval. This admiration, however, extends to a contempt for Iōzen's rival, the brash and unkempt beast Kumatetsu, and later, a profound hatred for Kumatetsu's human apprentice, Kyuta. Ichirohiku's jealousy festers as Kyuta, another human in the beast world, excels in his training and gains the respect of others, including his own brother Jirōmaru. The chasm between the respect Kyuta earns and his own perceived inadequacy as a beast drives Ichirohiku to the edge of insanity.

His primary motivation is to prove his worth and to see his father, Iōzen, triumph over Kumatetsu to become the new lord of the Beast Kingdom. When Kumatetsu wins their decisive battle, Ichirohiku's negative emotions completely consume him. The emptiness within his heart, a spiritual manifestation of human self-loathing and negative feelings, overtakes him, granting him immense power but stripping him of his reason. This possession leads him to commit the unforgivable act of impaling Kumatetsu with his father's own sword.

Ichirohiku’s role in the story is that of a dark mirror to the protagonist, Kyuta. Both are humans raised in the Beast Kingdom, but where Kyuta finds a father figure in Kumatetsu and slowly learns to confront his own inner darkness, Ichirohiku is consumed by his. He is the embodiment of what Kyuta could have become without guidance and acceptance. His key relationships are defined by family and rivalry. He is deeply attached to his adoptive father, Iōzen, and loving toward his younger brother, Jirōmaru, though his obsession with their beastly traits fuels his self-hatred. His rivalry with Kyuta is one-sided but intense, born from a jealousy that the human boy is accepted and celebrated for who he is, while he himself remains an outsider in his own family.

Ichirohiku undergoes a significant transformation in the film's climax. Following his defeat, Kyuta chooses not to destroy him but to absorb his negative emotions and purge his heart with the help of Kumatetsu, who has reincarnated as a spiritual sword. This act of compassion and understanding saves Ichirohiku. He awakens the next morning in his bed with no memory of his rampage, but with a string bracelet tied to his wrist—a charm left by Kyuta as a symbol of friendship and hope. He is last seen as a much more level-headed young man, having been freed from his consuming hatred and given a second chance at peace.

In terms of abilities, Ichirohiku is a skilled martial artist and swordsman, having been trained from a young age to fight in the Beast Kingdom's traditions. However, his most notable power comes from the emptiness inside him, which manifests as a form of powerful telekinesis. This ability allows him to levitate objects, fling opponents, and even control weapons from a distance. At the peak of his madness, his power expands further, allowing him to shapeshift into a monstrous, translucent white whale inspired by the novel Moby Dick, which he uses to cause massive destruction in the human world. His pale skin, dark blue hair, and blue eyes give him a striking, almost ethereal appearance that contrasts with the more robust and animalistic features of the beast characters.
