Description
Liliana is a character in the anime Queen's Blade: Grimoire. She was originally a notorious pirate captain who terrorized the coastal waters of the Continent, raiding ships and evading capture by the Navy and other pursuers. Her life as a living human ended when she was attacked by the sea monster Kraken and drowned. She was later resurrected by the Swamp Witch through immense magical power and became the spearhead of the Swamp Witch's army in a plot to conquer the Continent.

Despite her reputation as a scoundrel, Liliana adheres strictly to a personal code known as the Pirate Aesthetics, a set of rules written by her grandmother, the Pirate Queen Artemis, who also served as her parental figure. This code demands elegance and refinement in all actions, so Liliana carries herself with the manners of a noble even while plundering. She is not cold-hearted; in particular, she shows great care and weakness toward the elderly, often going out of her way to treat them kindly. She is bound by the Aesthetics above all else and quotes them frequently when making decisions.

Her primary motivation is to follow the Pirate Aesthetics, which includes loyalty to her benefactor, the Swamp Witch, for being resurrected. She serves as a commander in the Swamp Witch's forces, leading her undead crew and phantom ship into battle. Liliana's key relationships include her grandmother Artemis, whose code she honors, and the Swamp Witch, to whom she owes her second life. She also commands a crew of skeleton pirates, who follow her orders aboard her flying ship.

Liliana is a reanimated being, implied to be undead after her resurrection, though this is not explicitly noted in all sources. Over the course of the story, she remains consistent in her adherence to the Pirate Aesthetics, though she encounters opponents who challenge her. Her development is tied to her role as an agent of the Swamp Witch and her occasional struggles to balance her scoundrel nature with the noble conduct demanded by her code.

In combat, Liliana wields a cutlass and a hand-crossbow. Her most notable ability, granted by the Swamp Witch, is the power to summon a flying ship manned by phantom crew members. The ship appears splendid initially but gradually deteriorates into a crumbling phantom vessel before vanishing. The ship is equipped with cannons, which are the only gunpowder weapons in the series. Her fighting style combines swordplay with ranged attacks, and she always accepts a challenge, as dictated by her Aesthetics.
