Description
Charlotte Scherzen is a prominent antagonist in Valkyrie Drive Mermaid, serving as a high-ranking member of Welter, the ruling organization on Mermaid Island. She holds the position of second-in-command to Governor Akira Hiragi and is also the leader of Adel, an elite group consisting of her most trusted subordinates who also serve as her lovers and sycophants. In this role, Charlotte is responsible for training and integrating new girls who are sent to the island.
Physically, Charlotte is a young woman of small stature, standing only 145 centimeters tall, a detail that contrasts with her domineering and intimidating presence. She has hip-length pink hair styled into twintails, purple eyes, and a voluptuous figure. Her wardrobe typically consists of provocative and commanding attire, such as thigh-high stockings, high-heeled boots, and a revealing corset. Her overall appearance is designed to be both sensual and formidable.
Charlotte’s personality is defined by extreme narcissism, cruelty, and a sadistic lust for power. She considers herself the most beautiful person on the island and demands constant admiration and submission from everyone around her. She is a control freak who rules through fear and abuse, resorting to heavy-handed and violent methods to resolve problems and enforce her will. Unlike some other pairs on the island whose relationships are framed as consensual, Charlotte's connections with her followers are characterized by psychological, physical, and sexual abuse, highlighting a profound abuse of power. She views the girls who serve her as mere tools to fuel her ego and satisfy her hedonistic desires. This behavior brings her into frequent conflict with the more moderate head of security, Kasumi Shigure.
Her primary motivation is the pursuit of her own selfish agenda, which often supersedes the mission of Welter and the orders of Governor Akira. Charlotte is deeply insecure about her authority and is susceptible to flattery and promises of greater power. This weakness is exploited later in the series when the new arrival, Momoka Sagara, manipulates Charlotte into believing she can usurp the Governor's position. Charlotte's desire to be the ultimate ruler on the island overrides her loyalty and caution, making her a pawn in a larger scheme.
Throughout the main story, Charlotte acts as a recurring obstacle for the protagonists, Mamori Tokonome and Mirei Shikishima. She initially dismisses them but becomes increasingly hostile as they defy her authority. Her role escalates when she finally betrays Governor Akira during a public battle, revealing Akira's true gender and seizing control of Welter. However, this victory is short-lived. Her new partner, Momoka, quickly reveals her own treacherous nature by physically striking Charlotte and asserting dominance over her, leading to Charlotte's mental and emotional collapse. This betrayal shatters her reputation and leadership, marking a significant fall from grace. In the end, after the conflict on the island is resolved, Charlotte is seen being sent away with her harem, having faced no real punishment for her tyranny.
In combat, Charlotte is a Liberator, meaning she can use her partners, known as Extars, to transform into powerful weapons. When not transformed, she can fight using her sharp fingernails as claws, which are capable of cutting through clothing. However, her fighting ability is hampered by her overconfidence. If an opponent damages her nails, she experiences significant pain and becomes vulnerable. At her most powerful, she can achieve a form known as her Soldier Arm, but this is ultimately not enough to defeat the protagonists in the final confrontation.
