Description
Charlotte Scherzen is a secondary antagonist and a significant figure of authority within the setting of the anime Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid. She serves as a high-ranking member of Welter, the ruling organization on the island, though her exact title remains unspecified. Her primary responsibility is the training and integration of new girls sent to the island, a duty she carries out with a cold and calculating demeanor. Physically, she is depicted as a beautiful woman with long, hip-length pink hair, purple eyes, and a curvaceous figure. She is also the leader of Adel, an elite group composed of a few of her most devoted followers.
Beneath her confident and arrogant exterior lies a fundamentally cruel, narcissistic, and power-hungry personality. She holds an inflated sense of self-worth, believing herself to be the most beautiful person on the island and demanding constant admiration from those around her. Scherzen derives sadistic pleasure from wielding her authority to inflict physical and psychological pain, particularly on the followers in her group, and is known to be sexually abusive towards them, treating her subordinates as disposable tools for her own gratification rather than as partners. She is manipulative and prioritizes her own selfish agenda over the official mission of the organization she works for. As a control freak who rules with an iron fist, she subjects anyone who disobeys or displeases her to public and humiliating punishments, ensuring the rest of the island's population remains terrified of crossing her. Her personal philosophy is summed up in her declaration that disorder must be punished.
In her role within the story, Scherzen is a primary enforcer of the island's harsh rules and a persistent obstacle for the protagonists. She frequently clashes with the more moderate commander, Kasumi Shigure, over how to handle problems, as Scherzen almost always resorts to brutal, heavy-handed methods. Her relationship with the then-governor, Akira Hiiragi, is one of begrudging subordination, though she holds private ambitions to usurp Akira's position. Her key relationships are largely defined by abuse and manipulation, most notably with the members of her Adel team, whom she controls through fear and coercion.
Scherzen undergoes a significant but abrupt change following the arrival of a new character, Momoka Sagara. Momoka quickly manipulates Scherzen into challenging Akira for leadership. After emerging victorious, Scherzen becomes the new governor, but this triumph is short-lived. Her descent begins when Momoka, revealing her true nature, turns on Scherzen and slaps her, which causes her to have a severe mental breakdown. This event shatters her reputation and authority, leaving her a mentally unstable and broken woman. In the series finale, after the central conflict is resolved, Scherzen is last seen being sent away from the island alongside her followers, having faced no real punishment for her many cruel actions.
As for her abilities, Scherzen is a Liberator, capable of using Exters as weapons through a process called "Driving". In combat, her primary method of attack is using her own sharp, long fingernails as claws against her foes. Her primary weakness, however, is her overconfidence and god complex, which often leads her to lose focus. If an opponent can damage her fingernails, she experiences significant pain and becomes extremely vulnerable to counterattacks.
