Description
Hayato Kisaragi is the main protagonist of the story, a young man who enrolls as a first-year student at the Little Garden academy after demonstrating an exceptional aptitude for wielding a Hundred, the primary weapon used to combat alien creatures known as Savages. His background is marked by tragedy; he lost his parents during the Second Savage Attack, an event that forced him to return to his homeland of Yamato with his younger sister, Karen Kisaragi. The two were placed in an orphanage, where Hayato became the primary caretaker for his sister, who suffers from a chronic illness. His primary motivation for becoming a Slayer is deeply rooted in his devotion to Karen. He accepts a place at Little Garden under the condition that the academy would provide his sister with the advanced, world-class medical treatment she desperately needs.

In terms of personality, Hayato is portrayed as fundamentally kind, caring, and selfless, with a strong sense of responsibility toward those he cares about. He is determined and brave when the situation calls for a fight, but he generally dislikes conflict without a just cause. His compassionate nature often puts him in situations where he acts chivalrously, which, combined with his status as a Variant, tends to attract the attention of several female characters, leading to a number of accidental and comedic mishaps typical of a harem protagonist. Despite his growing harem, he can be oblivious to the romantic feelings of others or becomes easily flustered when faced with them, as his primary focus has long been his sister's well-being.

Hayato’s role in the story is driven by his hidden power and rapid growth as a Slayer. He is revealed to be a Variant, a human who was infected with the Savage virus as a child and survived, granting him extraordinary abilities. This infection occurred during his childhood in Gudenburg, where he befriended Emilia Hermit. When Emilia was grievously wounded by a Savage, a young Hayato attempted to suck the poison from her wound, inadvertently absorbing the virus and turning both of them into Variants. This past event was suppressed in his memory, and he only learns the truth after reuniting with Emilia at Little Garden. His latent powers manifest dramatically during a duel with the student council president, Claire Harvey, where he enters a berserker state, showcasing his immense potential.

Hayato's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with his sister, Karen Kisaragi, is his strongest motivation and a constant source of emotional support. His relationship with Emilia Hermit is complex; she is his childhood friend, the catalyst for his powers, and his primary love interest, with whom he eventually admits his feelings and consummates a relationship. He also shares a significant, emotionally complicated dynamic with Claire Harvey, the student council president who challenges him to a duel on his first day and later develops strong feelings for him, creating a central romantic dilemma for Hayato. He forms close friendships with fellow Slayers like Fritz Granz and Latia Saintemilion, fighting alongside them in the elite Selection Squad.

Throughout the narrative, Hayato develops from a talented but untrained novice into a heroic and powerful warrior. He joins the student council as vice president and plays a pivotal role in major battles, including the fight against the powerful foe Celivia. His journey pushes him beyond his limits, leading to a final attack on the main Savage base that saves humanity but leaves his body severely damaged, forcing him to retire as a Slayer.

Notable abilities include his wielding of a Chivalric-type Hundred called Hien, which primarily takes the form of a katana and reinforces his body with armor. As a Variant, he has the highest-ever recorded compatibility with a Hundred, allowing him to deploy Full Body Armament, a complete set of armor that significantly boosts his power but is often noted for its goofy appearance, particularly the helmet. He can also use a rare technique called Dual Act, allowing him to deploy a second Hundred. His Variant nature gives him a Superpowered Evil Side, a Raging Berserk state where his power surges out of control, though he eventually learns to manage it. Furthermore, his unique biology allows him to calm out-of-control Variants by kissing them, transferring some of the virus to stabilize them, and he is also a skilled swordsman, having trained in the Kenzaki Dojo style from a young age.
