Movie
Description
Junta Teshima is a former student at Sohoku High School and a key member of its bicycle racing club, eventually serving as the team's captain. He has fairly long, wavy hair that he sometimes wears back in a ponytail. In the anime, his hair is solid black, though his design in other media features shades of blue and purple. He is often shown wearing shirts with star designs.
Teshima is highly intelligent and relies on his wits as a strategist to succeed in races, as he does not consider himself a naturally powerful cyclist. At first glance, he can seem nonchalant, condescending, and teasing, even acting subtly hostile towards opponents or rivals to meet his goals. However, this exterior masks a deeper personal struggle. Teshima carries a complex about being an ordinary cyclist who cannot compete in the world of elite cyclists. He is a thoroughly hard worker but lacks confidence in his own abilities, often resigning himself to failure as the fate of someone ordinary. Before entering high school, he nearly quit cycling altogether after feeling he could never win. Despite this, he possesses a fierce, competitive desire to win and can become emotionally charged when he refuses to accept his perceived limitations. After initially clashing with the talented first-year members of the Sohoku team, Teshima reveals himself to be humble and deeply supportive, willing to physically push teammates who have fallen behind and ease their mental burdens. He takes his role as a supporter very seriously and believes strongly in his teammates, encouraging others to do the same. He also demonstrates great nobility and sportsmanship, once stopping to wait for an opponent who had bike trouble during a race.
Teshima's central motivation is to overcome his status as an ordinary athlete and achieve victory through strategy and partnership. His defining relationship is with his classmate and close friend Hajime Aoyagi. They met on their first day of high school and, discovering they were both average cyclists, decided to work together as a team of two to surpass their limits. Their bond is so strong that Teshima can often guess what Aoyagi is thinking. Teshima acts as the brains of their partnership, using his power percentages to control the rate at which he pulls Aoyagi along and blocking opponents so his partner can break ahead for the goal. This strategy earned them five wins in six races during their first year. Teshima greatly admires Jin Tadokoro, a senior who mentored him and Aoyagi. He also has a complex history with Shunsuke Imaizumi, an elite cyclist who often won races against him in middle school, and with Takuto Ashikiba, a close friend from middle school who later becomes a rival on another team. His rivalry with Kimitaka Koga, a teammate with whom he had a falling out, ultimately leads to a crucial race that secures Teshima's spot on the Inter High team during his third year.
Teshima's role in the story evolves from a determined second-year intent on proving himself to a wise and encouraging captain in his third year. Initially unable to make the Inter High team, he and Aoyagi train relentlessly and eventually become captain and vice-captain after the seniors graduate. In this leadership role, he becomes adept at encouraging and giving tips to other members, such as advising Imaizumi to acknowledge his teammates' efforts. As a cyclist, Teshima is not a powerful sprinter and has never won a sprint finish in official races. Instead, he excels as a strategist and a climber. According to Yusuke Makishima, Teshima has the potential to be a climber, though his technique and instinct are mediocre. His notable abilities include performing psychological warfare on opponents, accurately predicting when other cyclists will overcome handicaps, and skillfully blocking opponents from passing him, even knocking their bikes aside without falling himself. Through participating in many races and serving on the support team, he develops profound knowledge of race strategy and decision-making, allowing him to give his teammates the mental and tactical pushes they need to win.
