Description
Emperor Azusa Masaki Jurai is the ruler of the planet Jurai and the patriarch of the powerful Masaki family within the royal hierarchy. As the holder of the Jurai throne, he holds the highest political authority in the galaxy-spanning empire, though his personal life is marked by a complex history of adventure, romance, and family duty.

Azusa's background is unusual for a Juraian monarch. He was not born on the throne but rather on a colony outside the empire, as his mother Amame had left Jurai to marry a Galaxy Police officer named Kazuki Yotsuga. As a child, he was deeply reluctant to leave his parents and return to the royal court, resisting the efforts of the formidable Lady Seto Kamiki, who sought to restore the declining House Masaki to power. Seto spent two years cultivating a relationship with the young Azusa before a pirate attack on his colony forced him to witness her incredible power and accept her offer to return to Jurai. This event awakened his Juraian heritage and set him on the path to becoming emperor.

The most defining event of his early life was his bonding with a first-generation Royal Tree, a rare and immense honor that made him the leading candidate for the throne. This occurred through his relationship with a young woman named Mitsuki Amaki, who sacrificed herself to gift him her own unnamed Royal Tree, which he christened Kirito. Mitsuki's essence was placed within the tree, where she remains preserved to this day. This tragedy shaped his early reign and his sense of duty.

His personal life is also defined by his two wives. Originally betrothed to Misaki Kamiki, the daughter of his mentor Lady Seto, Azusa's ship crashed on Earth during a battle with the villain Kagato. There, he was nursed back to health by a young Earth woman named Funaho, who possessed distant Juraian ancestry. He fell in love with her and insisted on bringing her back to Jurai as his first wife, much to the shock of the court. After overcoming political turmoil, it was decreed that Funaho would be the first queen, and Azusa later married Misaki as his second wife, a polyamorous arrangement that is accepted within the family.

In terms of personality, Azusa is a proud and authoritative figure who is accustomed to his will being law. As the Emperor, he can be stubborn and set in his ways, which initially causes friction when dealing with his descendants who do not follow his commands. However, beneath the regal exterior lies a more vulnerable side; he is famously terrified of the wrath of his own wives and his mother-in-law, Lady Seto, leading to a dynamic where the most powerful man in the galaxy is often henpecked at home. He genuinely cares for his family's happiness, though he struggles to balance his expectations as a ruler with his role as a father.

His role in the main story is primarily as an authority figure who watches over the events on Earth from a distance. He is the father of Prince Yosho, Princesses Ayeka and Sasami, and the great-grandfather of the protagonist Tenchi Masaki. When Yosho chose to remain on Earth rather than return to assume the throne, Azusa was deeply disappointed. This disappointment extends to Tenchi, whom he initially dismisses as unworthy due to Yosho's decision to name the young man as his successor. He eventually softens his stance, allowing his daughters to remain on Earth after seeing they are truly happy there, though his decision is also influenced by a healthy fear of displeasing his wives.

Over the course of the narrative, Azusa undergoes development from a distant, disapproving patriarch into a more accepting family member. While he remains a formal and powerful monarch, his interactions with Tenchi and the others reveal a man who, despite his pride, ultimately prioritizes the well-being and happiness of those he loves. He learns to accept unconventional family structures, including his grandson's chaotic household.

As the Emperor, Azusa is a formidable figure. His most notable ability is his piloting of the first-generation Royal Tree ship Kirito, which grants him access to the near-invincible defensive technique known as Light Hawk Wings. Even as a boy, he was trained in Juraian martial arts by his mother and was able to hold his own against adult pirates before coming into his full power. His mere presence commands the authority of the Juraian Empire, though much of his most active adventuring occurred in his youth.
