OVA
Description
Baguma is a secondary character appearing in the third OVA series of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki. He is a large, brawny man with a shaved head and no visible eyebrows, fitting the visual archetype of a physical powerhouse. Within the structure of the Kuramitsu family, he serves as an elite member of the personal Kuramitsu Army and is one of three subordinates directly under the command of a superior named Mashisu Makibi.
His personality aligns closely with his physical appearance, as he embodies the typical muscle man archetype. Baguma possesses a notable sense of pride, not only in his physical strength but specifically in his identity as an S-class Esper, meaning he is a powerful psychic or individual with extrasensory abilities. This pride in his rank and power is a key aspect of his character.
In terms of his role in the story, Baguma is part of a plot orchestrated by Misao and Mikumu Kuramitsu. Along with his colleagues Sorunaru and Fujimasa, he receives orders from Mashisu to incapacitate or capture the members of the Tenchi household. The ultimate goal of this plan is to lure the protagonist Tenchi to a ship called the Choubimaru under the false pretense that his friends have been kidnapped, and then destroy the ship with him on board. Baguma is specifically assigned the task of subduing the genius scientist Washu Hakubi.
This mission proves to be his primary and most defining moment in the narrative. Despite his S-class ranking and his confidence in his Esper powers, Baguma is easily defeated. When he confronts Washu, she effortlessly negates his ESP abilities, rendering his psychic powers useless. Following this, Washu defeats him in direct, single-handed physical combat. The fight concludes with Baguma being captured, a swift and decisive end that highlights the vast gap in power between him and Washu.
Baguma does not have significant personal relationships that drive his development; his function is almost entirely as an operative acting on the orders of his superiors. He is presented as a loyal soldier executing a plan, and his defeat serves to advance the plot by demonstrating the effectiveness of the countermeasures against the Kuramitsu scheme. There is no indication of significant character development or change for Baguma beyond his role in this failed operation. His abilities, while theoretically formidable as an S-class Esper, are never effectively showcased in combat due to Washu's immediate nullification of his powers.
