Description
Kaori Makimura is the female protagonist and the partner of the private detective Ryo Saeba. Forming one half of the team known as City Hunter, her primary role in the story involves managing the operational side of their business, such as finding clients and handling managerial tasks, while also serving as the moral compass and primary check on her partner's more troublesome impulses.
Kaori was born on March 31, 1967, making her nineteen years old at the start of the series. She is a Japanese woman of average height with a slim build, short brown hair, and brown eyes. Her family background is complex, as she was adopted by the Makimura family. Her foster brother, Hideyuki Makimura, was Ryo Saeba's original partner before he was killed in the line of duty. It is later revealed that Kaori shares no blood relation with Hideyuki; she was brought into the family after her biological father, a criminal suspect named Junichi Hisaishi, died in an accident. Her birth name is Kaori Hisaishi, and she has a biological older sister, Sayuri Tachiki, from whom she was separated when they were children.
In terms of personality, Kaori is presented as a tomboy whose short hair and sometimes masculine appearance lead to a recurring gag where she is mistaken for a handsome young man. Despite this, she possesses a good figure and is recognized as attractive when she chooses to dress in a more feminine manner. She is a caring and responsible individual, with a notable interest in visiting orphanages. However, she is most famous for her explosive temper, which is almost exclusively triggered by the lecherous behavior of her partner, Ryo. She cannot tolerate his relentless womanizing, skirt-chasing, and habit of hitting on their female clients.
This dynamic is central to her role in the story and defines her most important relationship, the one with Ryo Saeba. Kaori is secretly in love with Ryo, and over time, it becomes clear that his feelings for her are also romantic, even if he rarely shows it. Their relationship is a constant push-and-pull, characterized by bickering and pranks, but underscored by a deep and unshakable trust. When Ryo's advances toward other women become too egregious, Kaori is the only person who can stop him, often by producing an impossibly large and heavy hammer from out of nowhere to strike him down as a form of comedic punishment. This ability to "wield" such a weapon, often labeled with weights up to 100 tons or more, is one of her most notable abilities. According to some sources, her hammer could be used to strike like a melee weapon in the manga, while the anime also depicted it being thrown like a boomerang.
Beyond her comedic arsenal, Kaori has other practical skills. She is a capable cook and is responsible for cleaning and maintaining their shared living space. In a more serious vein, she learned how to set booby traps and handle explosives from their ally, the mercenary known as Umibozu. She also carries her late brother's Colt.357 Magnum Lawman MK III as a keepsake and for self-defense. However, her marksmanship is intentionally poor. Ryo secretly tampered with the gun's alignment to ensure she could never hit her target, a decision made to prevent her from having to take a human life and carry the same burden he does. He later re-aligns the gun when he accepts her choice to stay by his side, acknowledging her as a full-fledged partner in his dangerous world.
Kaori's development throughout the story is tied to her growing confidence and her deepening bond with Ryo. What begins as a clumsy substitute for her slain brother evolves into a true partnership. Her personal goal is to achieve success in her work, and she practices shooting to be a better partner for Ryo. By the end of the narrative, the unspoken love between them is resolved, with hints and direct implications in later works that they eventually marry, with Kaori taking the name Kaori Saeba.
