Movie
Description
Gourry Gabriev is a tall, handsome man in his early twenties with long blonde hair and blue eyes. He comes from a family of swordsmen and originally left his homeland to escape conflicts over a family heirloom, a legendary weapon known as the Sword of Light. Since then, he has worked as a wandering mercenary.
In the story, Gourry is a master swordsman whose fighting ability is formidable, especially considering he does not use magic. His primary role is as the self-appointed guardian and constant traveling companion of the sorceress Lina Inverse. Despite his immense physical strength and skill in battle, he is famously unintelligent and has a very poor memory, often forgetting important facts or the names of enemies moments after hearing them. This dimwitted nature serves as a major source of comic relief, as he tends to make blunt, tactless observations that inadvertently humiliate his companions. Beneath this, however, he possesses surprisingly sharp intuition and is an excellent judge of character, once deducing a mysterious ally was not human long before anyone else did, simply thinking it was obvious.
His personality is defined by a calm, chivalrous, and heroic demeanor which contrasts sharply with Lina's fiery temper and greed. He is fiercely loyal, patient with Lina's tantrums, and becomes seriously angered only when his friends are threatened, to the point of releasing an intimidating aura of killing intent. While he would do anything to protect Lina, their relationship is a complex and unspoken romance. It is clear the two love each other and can often sense what the other is thinking in battle, but their bond rarely develops into overt public affection, partly due to Lina's emotional immaturity.
In Slayers Premium, Gourry travels with Lina to the seaside town of Acassi, which is famous for its delicious octopus dishes. When a plate of the local specialty is served, Gourry fights Lina for the food and ends up eating one of the cursed octopuses. This curse causes the victim to speak only in Takogo, a nonsense language that sounds like octopus speech. As a result, Gourry spends much of the film speaking gibberish, which often leads to awkward situations. For instance, what he intends as the phrase how horrible is translated as flat chested, a comment that greatly offends Lina. While he continues to serve as a protector, his affliction adds to the comedic chaos, especially as the curse eventually spreads to Lina and other mages, preventing them from casting spells and forcing the group to find another way to stop a demon from being released.
His notable abilities are almost entirely physical. He is one of the world's greatest swordsmen, displaying superhuman strength, stamina, and acrobatic prowess. For most of the series, he wields the Sword of Light, a legendary weapon that produces a blade of pure energy capable of cutting through almost anything and absorbing magical attacks. However, his reliance on physical combat is absolute; he cannot use magic. While it has been stated he possesses a magical capacity that rivals Lina's, his inconsistent memory prevents him from ever learning to cast spells. In Slayers Premium, his effectiveness is further hampered by the octopus curse, which for a swordsman like him is more of a social nuisance than a combat handicap, though it prevents him from activating any magical aspects of his swordplay.
