Description
The character known as Fat Man is a primary antagonist in the 1998 anime film Spriggan. His real name is never revealed, and his codename is a deliberate reference to the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki during World War II. He serves as an elite operative of the U.S. Machine Corps, a rogue and heavily armed faction within the American military that seeks to seize ancient artifacts for the purpose of global domination.

Before becoming the cybernetic warrior seen in the film, Fat Man had a significant history as an instructor in a secret military program known as Project COSMOS. This black-ops initiative was designed to train children from a young age to become perfect, superhuman soldiers. One of his most notable trainees was a boy named Yu Ominae. Their relationship took a violent turn when Yu discovered the true, exploitative nature of the program and turned against his handlers, killing many of them in his escape. Fatman was one of the few survivors of this incident, though he was left brutally injured. The U.S. Machine Corps saved his life by rebuilding him with extensive cybernetic enhancements, effectively turning him into a living weapon fueled by a need for vengeance against his former protégé.

As a cyborg, Fat Man is physically imposing, with a massive, hulking frame. His body is reinforced with Orihalcon armor plating, a material of incredible strength derived from the same ancient civilization that ARCAM seeks to protect. His most notable features are his black eyes, his lack of visible hair, and his trademark cigar. He lost his original right arm during Yu Ominae's betrayal and has replaced it with a sophisticated mechanical prosthesis. In combat, he can detach this prosthesis and replace it with a devastating Vulcan rotary cannon, transforming himself into a mobile artillery platform. He is often seen in the company of his partner, another cyborg agent named Little Boy, with the pair named as a thematic unit representing immense destructive force.

In the story, Fat Man and his partner are dispatched to Mount Ararat in Turkey, the site of a massive excavation of the Noah's Ark artifact. His primary mission is to assist his commander, the powerful psychic Colonel MacDougall, in capturing the Ark. However, his personal motivation is far more compelling than his orders. He is driven by a deep and obsessive desire to settle his old score with Yu Ominae, who has since become a Spriggan agent for the rival ARCAM organization. To ensure this confrontation, Fat Man resorts to brutal psychological warfare, murdering several of Yu's friends and colleagues. He leaves each victim with a chilling message meant to lure Yu to the battlefield: "Noah will be your grave." His role in the narrative is that of a relentless and personal physical threat, serving as a major obstacle that the protagonist must overcome.

During the climactic battle on the snowy slopes of Mount Ararat, Fat Man demonstrates the full extent of his cybernetic abilities. He relies on his immense size, his raw mechanical strength, and his powerful built-in firearms to overwhelm his enemies. In his final confrontation with Yu, he manages to overpower the younger fighter and begins to crush him with his one remaining organic hand. However, this moment of triumph is short-lived. Yu enters a focused, trance-like state and uses his own Orihalcon combat knife to slice off Fat Man's hand in a single, swift motion. As the enraged cyborg opens fire with his gatling gun, Yu uses his agility to evade the bullets and commandeers an ARCAM jeep. He then turns the vehicle's powerful 30mm cannon on Fat Man, the hail of high-caliber shells finally being enough to tear through his advanced armor, leading to his death.
