Description
Jean Jacques Mondo, also known as Jean Jacquemonde in the original manga, is a French operative working for the ARCAM Corporation as a Spriggan agent. Hailing from Lyon, France, his early life was marked by tragedy and a unique heritage. Born with the latent genetic potential for lycanthropy, a trait linked to ancient biotechnology, his biological father Rick Bordeau possessed the same werewolf abilities. After his father abandoned the family, Jean was adopted by Maria Felton and grew up alongside her son, Mark Felton. This second chance at a family was violently taken away when agents of the Trident Corporation, seeking to exploit Jean’s dormant werewolf genes, killed his adoptive mother and brother. This event defined his path, leading to his capture and imprisonment in a French military research facility. He was eventually rescued by a young Tea Flatte, an experience that culminated in his first voluntary transformation into a werewolf and his subsequent escape. Following this, Jean joined ARCAM under the strict condition that they would never medically examine his body, a request born from his traumatic past and desire for autonomy over his own biology.
In the field, Jean presents a layered and often contradictory personality. He is a fierce and capable operator who approaches his duties with a pragmatic ruthlessness, believing that the protection of humanity from dangerous artifacts sometimes requires lethal force. This was starkly illustrated during the Noah’s Ark mission in Turkey, where he executed a wounded enemy, Fatman, an act that put him at odds with his more idealistic partner, Yu Ominae. Yet, this cold efficiency is not a sign of cruelty. Beneath his harsh exterior lies a man with a fundamentally good heart who prioritizes the protection of innocent lives. He is often depicted as patient and mature, but this calm demeanor can give way to volatility, especially when confronting oppressive adversaries or dealing with the trauma of his own transformations. He fiercely rejects being labeled a monster because of his lycanthropy and carries deep emotional scars from the promise he made to his adoptive family to never transform again. During combat, he can be cocky and boastful about his skills, showing little sympathy for those who commit murder for ambition or misguided beliefs.
Jean’s primary motivation stems from a desire to prevent others from suffering the same fate as his family. By securing and sealing dangerous artifacts for ARCAM, he works to ensure that the power of ancient civilizations cannot be used to harm the innocent. His role in the story is that of a key field operative and a crucial ally to the series’ protagonist, Yu Ominae. While the two often clash over their differing moral approaches, Jean serves as a mentor of sorts, warning Yu not to let sentimentality interfere with the brutal realities of their secret war. His most significant relationships are forged through conflict and shared history. Alongside Yu, he has battled enemies ranging from the Machiner’s Platoon soldiers to the brainwashed child soldiers of COSMOS. He has also formed surprising alliances, such as when he grudgingly teamed up with former ARCAM enemies Iwao Akatsuki and Bo Brantz to sabotage a Trident Corporation operation at the South Pole Shrine. His most personal confrontation was with his biological father, Rick Bordeau, in Romania, where he learned the true origins of his lycanthropic heritage.
As a character, Jean undergoes significant development. Initially, his werewolf transformation could be triggered involuntarily by something as simple as the sight of his own blood. During his teenage years, he gained a measure of control, able to transform at will. However, a near-fatal encounter in Ecuador, where the agent Oboro forced him to transform only to impale him, left him for dead. Life-saving surgery by a fellow operative, Percup Ramdi, accelerated his regenerative healing but had unpredictable side effects; it became unclear whether he could still transform into a werewolf on his own, or if the process had been suppressed or altered.
Jean’s abilities make him a formidable combatant even by Spriggan standards. His most notable power is his lycanthropic transformation. In his werewolf form, he possesses tremendous superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and accelerated healing, capable of overwhelming entire platoons of soldiers. Even in his human form, he exhibits exceptional speed and agility, allowing him to dodge automatic gunfire and close distances in an instant. He is also a highly skilled martial artist and an expert marksman, with a preference for heavy weaponry. His signature weapon is a Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun, which he often carries with a bandolier of ammunition, and he has also been seen using firearms like the Smith & Wesson Model 6904 and an RPG-2 rocket launcher.
