Description
Kakeru Tobe is a male second-year student in Class 2-F at Sobu High School. He is an active member of the school's soccer club and a core member of the popular clique led by Hayato Hayama. His birthday is August 29th. Tobe has a flashy appearance, with dyed light brown hair that he typically sweeps back and secures with a headband, paired with grey eyes. During colder months, he often wears a hoodie or sweater underneath his school blazer, contributing to his casual and energetic look.

In terms of personality, Tobe is exceptionally energetic, excitable, and highly sociable. He thrives in group activities and enjoys being the center of attention, often using slang expressions like "Whey!" or "Waaayyyy." Hayama describes him as the best at getting everyone energized, and he enthusiastically participates in school events such as the summer camp, cultural festival, and school trip. However, due to his loudness and lack of tact, he can come across as shallow, noisy, or annoying to others. Yukino Yukinoshita, for instance, considers him an easily excited person whose only talent is making noise. Hachiman Hikigaya initially regards him as an annoying playboy, especially because Tobe often uses Hachiman as an unwitting topic of conversation. Despite these flaws, Tobe is fundamentally a well-intentioned and good-natured person who cares deeply for his friends. He has shown genuine kindness, such as being fond of children during the summer camp activities, and is generally helpful to others.

Tobe's primary motivation throughout the story revolves around his social standing and his romantic feelings. He is a loyal member of Hayama's group and takes pride in being close to the most popular student in school. A central element of his character arc is his unrequited affection for his classmate, Hina Ebina. This crush is a key motivator, leading him to seek help from the Service Club before the school trip to Kyoto. His goal is to confess to Ebina without being rejected, hoping to change their relationship while fearing the potential awkwardness that might follow a failed confession.

Tobe's role in the story is primarily that of a supporting character who serves as both a social catalyst and a representation of typical, albeit superficial, high school popularity. As a member of the top-tier social group, he helps illustrate the dynamics and pressures of maintaining such a clique. He is often used as a foil to the more isolated and cynical Hachiman. The most significant plot point involving Tobe is his request to the Service Club. While Hachiman and his clubmates initially try to help Tobe create a good opportunity to confess, Hachiman eventually learns that Ebina herself does not want a relationship, as she fears it would disrupt the delicate balance of their friend group. To fulfill both Tobe’s wish (to not be rejected) and Ebina’s wish (to maintain the status quo), Hachiman stages a fake public confession to Ebina, which she rejects, effectively preventing Tobe from making his own confession. Though Tobe is unaware of the true reasons behind this intervention, he does not hold a grudge against Hachiman.

Key relationships shape Tobe's development significantly. He is best friends with Hayato Hayama, whom he admires and often seeks approval from. Initially, his friendships with Ooka and Yamato, the other two boys in the group, are superficial and exist only through their shared connection to Hayama. However, after a workplace tour incident where Hayama deliberately distances himself, the three of them bond more closely and develop a more independent and mutual friendship. His relationship with Hachiman starts quite negatively. Tobe is the first person to mistakenly call Hachiman "Hikitani-kun," a nickname that persists among his peers. After the summer camp incident, he develops a very negative opinion of Hachiman, viewing him as a terrible person. However, as the series progresses, particularly after the Kyoto trip, Tobe's attitude softens. He begins to engage with Hachiman more amicably, though he continues to use the incorrect name, much to Hachiman's annoyance. He also has a friendly but often subservient relationship with Iroha Isshiki, the manager of the soccer club and a junior student, who frequently bosses him around.

Throughout the series, Tobe shows a degree of development. He transitions from someone who values superficial popularity to an individual who begins to appreciate more authentic connections. This is evidenced by his deeper friendships with Ooka and Yamato and his persistent, sincere pursuit of Ebina in the aftermath of the Kyoto incident, such as when she gives him Valentine's chocolate. He demonstrates increased emotional maturity by not lashing out after his confession plan is thwarted and by showing loyalty and a willingness to help his friends, such as when he assists Iroha with a plan to confess to Hayama.

Tobe also possesses several notable abilities. He is athletically gifted, excelling in soccer and physical education. He also shows a talent for music, playing the drums for the band at the cultural festival. Furthermore, he proves to be a convincing actor when the situation calls for it. During the summer camp, he, along with Yumiko Miura and Hayato, is asked to act as a threatening delinquent to intimidate a group of young schoolgirls. He puts up a frighteningly convincing performance, a role he despised playing, which ultimately helps resolve the situation.
