ONA
Description
Dragon Yukano is a central figure in the Ninja Slayer narrative, initially appearing as the granddaughter of the venerable Dragon Gendoso and a dedicated apprentice at the Dragon Dojo in Neo-Saitama. She is a young woman of medium height with long hair, often depicted as grayish-purple in the anime, and is known for her traditional ninja attire which includes a red scarf and a red ninja suit. In her early days, her abilities were those of a skilled apprentice; while not yet a match for a full-fledged ninja, she possessed considerable strength compared to ordinary people, demonstrating high-level proficiency in archery and karate. She is fiercely loyal to her clan and follows orders willingly, prepared to defend her grandfather and his dojo against any threat.
The course of Yukano's life is irrevocably altered after a confrontation with the Dark Ninja. Following this event, she loses her memory and disappears, resurfacing under the new identity of Amnesia. In this state, she becomes a fervent member of the revolutionary organization Ikki Uchikowashi, adopting a personality that is far more cruel and ruthless than her former self, and she becomes a direct antagonist to the Ninja Slayer himself. Her role in the story becomes a quest for recovery, both for the Ninja Slayer who seeks to fulfill a promise to her grandfather, and for herself, as she is plagued by a fragmented past she cannot access.
Her key relationships are primarily defined by her connection to Dragon Gendoso, who is not merely her grandfather but also her protector. She shares a deep bond with Kenji Fujikido, the man who becomes the Ninja Slayer, and their fates become intertwined through his promise to find and protect her. Later, in Kyoto, she encounters Salamander, a Grand Master of the Zaibatsu Shadow Guild, who is revealed to be a former disciple of her grandfather and a brother figure from her childhood.
The most profound development in Yukano's story is the revelation of her true nature. Her mission is driven by a deep need to understand her own origins, which are shrouded in mystery. It is eventually uncovered that Yukano is not the biological granddaughter of Gendoso, but rather a real ninja who has lived for thousands of years. She is, in truth, the Dragon Ninja, a legendary arch-ninja and one of the six Ninja Knights who fought in a great ancient war against the tyrant Katsu Wanso. Her memory loss is a recurring phenomenon, a defensive mechanism triggered whenever her mind is placed under immense stress. For the millennia she has lived, her disciple, Dragon Gendoso, has watched over her during her periods of amnesia.
In her true form as the Dragon Ninja, she is a master of ninja science, and many of the world’s foundational ninja concepts, such as the Harikiri ritual, are her creations. Despite her legendary status, she is weaker than a typical ninja for much of the story. This is because she lost a part of her ninja soul and her memories during an incomplete ascension experiment in ancient times, and her ultimate goal is to recover her lost power and memories. There is a tragic caveat to this goal, however; regaining her memories as the Dragon Ninja means she will lose all of her memories and experiences as Yukano. Her journey is a struggle to reconcile these two identities, navigating the perils of the ninja world while seeking a way to reclaim her ancient power without sacrificing the person she has become.
