Description
Masaya Aoyama is Ichigo Momomiya's classmate and romantic interest. An orphan, he consciously crafted a persona of perfection—excelling academically, athletically as kendo team captain, and socially—to gain acceptance and adoption. This facade concealed his deep-seated disgust for humanity's environmental destruction, though Ichigo became the sole exception who made him feel "like a real human being."

His story involves multiple identities. Initially unaware, he periodically transformed into the Blue Knight, a protective alter ego manifesting from his subconscious desire to shield Ichigo, wielding a sword with heightened combat abilities. Later, Masaya collapsed and reawakened as Deep Blue, leader of the alien antagonists. Deep Blue claimed Masaya was artificially created as a vessel for his consciousness, yet Masaya's genuine love for Ichigo forged a distinct identity resisting this control. In the climax, Masaya sacrificed himself by expelling the Mew Aqua energy within him to destroy Deep Blue. Ichigo revived him by transferring her life force, after which residual Mew Aqua in his body restored her, resolving the conflict and prompting the aliens' departure.

Following these events, Masaya relocated to England to study the endangered species central to the Mew Project, with Ichigo accompanying him. During the sequel *Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode*, he sensed new threats targeting the Mew Mews and encouraged Ichigo to return to Tokyo to aid her team. He later rejoined her in Japan, no longer retaining his Blue Knight abilities. In the 2020 *Re-Turn* manga, he retains limited powers resembling Deep Blue's appearance and is depicted working in a scientific or medical field, shown in panels wearing a lab coat.

In the *Tokyo Mew Mew New* reboot, his core role as Ichigo's supportive boyfriend remains consistent. Key adaptations include an age lift aligning him with high school-aged characters and a character design reflecting the original manga's lighter skin tone, departing from the tanned appearance in the 2002 anime. His personality is consistently portrayed as outwardly calm, polite, and level-headed, though he exhibits moments of jealousy or protectiveness over Ichigo. He is bilingual, academically gifted, and environmentally conscious, participating in recycling initiatives.

His relationships center on his bond with Ichigo, which withstands revelations of his alien connections. Her father initially disapproved of their relationship until Masaya actively earned his respect, while her mother remained supportive. He occasionally interacts with other characters like Ryou Shirogane, collaborating on theories about threats to the Mew Mews, though these dynamics receive less narrative focus.
