Description
Haruichi Kominato is a student at Seidou High School and a member of its renowned baseball team. Born on March 1 in Kanagawa Prefecture, he is the younger brother of Ryousuke Kominato. Haruichi is physically small and has a frail appearance, with distinctive pink hair. Initially, his eyes are often hidden by his long bangs, becoming visible only during dramatic moments such as when he is batting. Later in the series, he cuts his hair shorter, making his eyes a permanent feature of his look. His small stature and delicate features mean he is sometimes mistaken for a girl.

In terms of personality, Haruichi is generally calm, quiet, and reserved, though he can also be surprisingly blunt. He is easily embarrassed, especially when receiving praise or compliments. Despite his shy nature, he is highly ambitious and possesses strong inner resolve. He often acts as the straight man to his more boisterous and energetic teammate, Eijun Sawamura, delivering deadpan corrections or sharp remarks in response to Sawamura's antics.

Haruichi's primary motivation is deeply tied to his older brother, Ryousuke, who is also a talented second baseman. While he greatly admires his brother, who protected him from bullies in his childhood, there is a level of strain in their relationship due to them playing the same position. Haruichi is driven by the ambition to surpass his brother, prove his own strength, and eventually claim the position of starting second baseman for himself.

As a first-year student, Haruichi serves as a reserve player on the first-string team, often entering games as a pinch hitter before eventually securing a regular starting position in his second year. On the field, his role is primarily as a second baseman, where he forms a key part of the team's infield defense, known as the keystone combo alongside the shortstop. His position in the batting order evolves over time; he begins as a lower-order hitter or pinch hitter, later moving to the crucial second spot in the lineup, and for a period batting third as a cleanup hitter.

Haruichi has several key relationships within the team. He is a close friend and roommate of fellow first-years Eijun Sawamura and Satoru Furuya. His interactions often involve him inadvertently fueling the rivalry between the two pitchers by praising one or the other. He shares a bond with Ryousuke that is central to his character arc, marked by a mixture of idolization and rivalry. His relationship with his brother is complex, as they both compete for the same position, yet Haruichi's ultimate goal is to be recognized as an equal by him.

Throughout the series, Haruichi undergoes considerable development. He starts as a quiet but talented benchwarmer who envies his friends for getting playing time. A key turning point is a devastating loss in the summer tournament, a defeat that deeply affects him and the entire team. As he moves into his second year, he works to overcome his weaknesses, such as limited stamina and lack of raw power, and becomes a more consistent and reliable starter. His physical change, symbolized by cutting his hair, marks his growth and determination to step out of his brother's shadow and forge his own path.

Haruichi's most notable ability is his exceptional batting precision and control. Despite his small size, he can place the ball in any direction he wants with pinpoint accuracy. He is a contact hitter who uses a wooden bat, which is harder to control and requires more skill than the metal bats typically used by high school players. He has an incredible baseball instinct, allowing him to make split-second decisions on where to hit, when to steal, or how to execute a defensive play. Defensively, he is extremely talented, with quick reflexes and the ability to field balls cleanly and make accurate throws even when off-balance or in mid-air. His primary weakness early on is his lack of stamina, an area he actively works to improve. He also initially struggles with a lack of physical power, a challenge that becomes more pronounced as he uses a wooden bat, but he adapts by focusing on bat control and improving his swing speed.
