Description
Grani Sigmund is a character from the anime Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold, serving as one of the seven new God Warriors of Asgard under the command of the priest Andreas. He is the older brother of Siegfried of Dubhe Alpha, the legendary God Warrior who perished during the previous Asgard arc. Sigmund stands approximately 1.90 meters tall and has fair skin, light straw-colored short hair, and blue eyes. His most notable physical feature is a small scar located on his lower left eyelid, a wound he received from Hilda when he discovered her corrupted by the Nibelung Ring. As the God Warrior representing Grani, in Norse mythology the horse of the hero Sigurd, his God Robe reflects this equine symbolism, and he wields a large sword named Gram, a legendary blade also rooted in the same mythological traditions.

Sigmund possesses a serious and honorable personality, carrying a deep-seated hatred and distrust for Athena's Saints, whom he blames for the death of his younger brother. He is characterized as a just warrior who loathes cheap tricks and underhanded tactics, preferring straightforward one-on-one combat. This sense of honor often puts him at odds with his fellow God Warrior Surt, a strategist who prioritizes efficiency over fairness, and Sigmund is described as being the direct opposite of him. Despite his stern exterior, he is deeply emotional and impulsive, driven by a powerful sense of loss and a desire to avenge his brother's honor. This grief is so profound that Saga of Gemini, himself an older brother, is able to recognize and empathize with Sigmunds pain.

His backstory reveals that before the events of Soul of Gold, Sigmund sensed something wrong and went to investigate Polaris Hilda. Upon finding her transformed by the demonic Nibelung Ring, she attacked him, giving him the scar on his face. He was subsequently imprisoned for treason and remained there throughout the battle between the Saints and the original God Warriors. It was during this time that he learned of Siegfrieds death, an event that cemented his hatred for the Olympian gods and Athena's warriors. After being released, he pledged himself to Andreas, serving as the guardian of the misty chamber Niflheim within the sacred tree Yggdrasil.

In his role within the story, Sigmund is initially wary of Aquarius Camus, suspicious of his allegiance to Athena despite Camus being a friend of Surtr. He later interrupts a duel between Scorpio Milo and Camus, only to have his chance at a fair fight thwarted by a trap set by Surt, much to his disgust. His primary conflict is with Gemini Saga, whom he confronts in Niflheim. During their battle, the God Robe of his deceased brother, Siegfried, materializes to protect him from Saga's Galaxian Explosion. The spirit of Siegfried then appears, pleading with Sigmund to stop fighting, which greatly affects the elder brother. However, before he can yield, Andreas uses the power of a corrupted Odin Sapphire to force Sigmund into a berserker state, robbing him of his will. Still in control of his mind but not his body, Sigmund begs Saga to kill him. Instead, Saga unleashes the power of his God Cloth to destroy only Sigmund's God Robe and the Odin Sapphire, freeing him from Andreas control without taking his life. Unconscious but alive, Sigmund is left in Niflheim.

After being liberated from Andreas influence, Sigmund experiences a significant change in perspective, accepting his brother's death and letting go of his consuming hatred. His development culminates when he appears during the final battle, no longer as an enemy but as a protector, defending Hilda and Freya from attacking Einherjar. He is last seen in the final episode alongside other former God Warriors like Frodi and Surt, training the next generation of Asgardian warriors, having reclaimed his honor. In combat, Sigmund is a formidable fighter whose named techniques include Paard Orkan. His fighting style is direct and powerful, utilizing both his immense Cosmo and the physical blade Gram to overwhelm his opponents.
