Description
Balder di Hraesvelgr is a character from the original video animation series Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold, serving as one of the seven new God Warriors of Asgard. He holds the title of the God Warrior of Hræsvelgr and is considered by many to be the most powerful among his peers. His name is derived from the光明之神 Balder from Norse mythology, while his God Robe is named after Hræsvelgr, a giant who takes the form of an eagle and is said to create the wind.

In terms of appearance, Balder is a tall young man, standing approximately 183 centimeters, with a lean and athletic build. He has long grey hair and distinctive red eyes. His demeanor is typically calm, serious, and analytical, a composure that makes him a figure even the villainous Andreas, the high priest of Asgard, consults in difficult situations. However, this serenity masks a ruthless and merciless nature in combat. Due to his unique invulnerability, he never attacks first, preferring to let opponents strike him to confirm his own immortality before killing them without compassion.

Balder's background is tragic. As a child, he lived in a desperately poor village where most of the inhabitants fell ill. Despite his own weak and frail body, he worked tirelessly to help others. Consumed by guilt over his inability to save everyone, he prayed before a statue of Odin, begging for the strength to make a difference. A mysterious god, who Balder believed to be Odin, answered his prayer. He granted Balder a body immune to all damage and fatigue, but in exchange, the god secretly stripped away his humanity, specifically his compassion and empathy for the suffering of others. This event warped his personality, giving him a god complex. Believing himself to be the chosen deity of Odin, he abandoned his village and his dying dog, seeking a place worthy of a man turned god. He found that place in a colosseum, where he became a legendary, merciless warrior, earning the nickname the immortal.

In the narrative of Soul of Gold, Balder acts as a major antagonist. He is one of the seven God Warriors under Andreas, who seeks to harvest the cosmos of the Gold Saints to complete the great tree Yggdrasil. Balder is the guardian of the light chamber of Yggdrasil, known as Alfheim. His primary role is to confront the Gold Saints as they ascend the tree. He specifically faces Virgo Shaka, the Gold Saint often called the man closest to god. This confrontation is the crux of his character arc. During the fight, Balder demonstrates the full extent of his invincibility, easily escaping Shaka's most powerful techniques like the Tenbu Horin and the Riku Do Rin Ne. He explains his past, insisting that he has become a god through Odin's blessing. Shaka, however, reveals a painful truth. After consulting with the goddess Athena, Shaka confirms that the being who blessed Balder was not Odin, but the evil god Loki, who was manipulating Andreas and the God Warriors.

The key relationship in Balder's story is with Virgo Shaka. Shaka does not simply defeat him with greater power; he enlightens him. When Shaka explains that Balder lost his capacity for empathy, the very thing that would make him a benevolent deity, Balder finally understands the deception. The revelation breaks his god complex and his will to fight, allowing Shaka to use the Tenbu Horin to destroy the divine curse from Loki.

Balder's development is a poignant fall from grace and redemption. He transitions from a kind-hearted child to a cold, arrogant immortal warrior, and finally to a regretful, dying man. When the invulnerability is removed, all the pain and damage he should have accumulated over years of battle crashes down upon him at once. In his final moments, lying in Shaka's arms, he weeps and calls himself a fool, fully regretting his actions. Shaka, in a final act of mercy, removes his sense of touch so he can die without suffering the full agony of his returning wounds.

Notably, Balder possesses several abilities tied to the Norse runes granted by Loki. His primary techniques are Ansuz and Yr. Ansuz, which he channels through his sword Tyrfing, releases a powerful energy blast that can destroy barriers. Yr allows him to manipulate reality or dimensions, summoning spectral Valkyries to attack his opponent. He also wields the cursed sword Tyrfing, which in mythology is a blade that always kills a man when drawn and is associated with inevitable doom. The source of his power, however, was the divine curse of invulnerability, which made him immune to physical harm, fatigue, and even attacks that targeted the soul, until it was undone by the superior cosmos of Virgo Shaka.
