Description
Eikþyrnir Surtr is a character from the anime Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold, serving as one of the seven God Warriors of Asgard under the command of Andreas. His past is deeply intertwined with that of Aquarius Camus, as the two were childhood friends who trained together in Siberia. This friendship was shattered by a tragic accident when a training exercise by Camus triggered an avalanche that killed Surtr’s younger sister, Sinmore. Following this incident, Surtr abandoned his previous bonds and path, embracing the power of hatred and becoming a God Warrior. Feeling eternally guilty for causing the personality change, Camus pledged his resurrected life to atone for his mistake and save Surtr's soul.
In terms of personality, Surtr is depicted as a calm, cruel, and highly arrogant individual. He is recognized as a master strategist who prioritizes efficiency in combat, a trait that makes him the philosophical opposite of his fellow God Warrior, Grani Sigmund, who despises what he perceives as cheap tricks. This calculating nature is evident in his battles, where he prefers to manipulate situations from the sidelines before striking decisively. Despite his composed demeanor, Surtr is filled with a deep-seated hatred that manifests through his powers. He shows little regard for others, openly mocking Frodi for his failures, and is determined to sever all emotional ties to increase his own strength, a process amplified by the Corrupted Odin Sapphire.
Surtr's role in the story is primarily that of an antagonist directly linked to the Gold Saints through Camus. He first appears battling Scorpio Milo, easily overpowering him with a combination of his own flames and Camus’s freezing attacks. As a guardian of Asgard, he is assigned to protect a specific chamber, Jaheim, which is later revealed to be an illusion concealing the fiery realm of Muspelheim. His major confrontation occurs when Capricorn Shura infiltrates his domain. After Shura is defeated by Camus, Surrit appears and, ignoring Camus’s pleas, fatally impales the Gold Saint with his sword, fully revealing his descent into ruthless villainy. This act forces Camus to finally fight his friend with lethal intent.
The key relationship in Surtr's narrative is his bond with Aquarius Camus. While Surtr claims to hold no outward grudge against Camus for his sister’s death, his actions are driven by a twisted philosophy that embraces loss as a source of power. His development in the series is a tragic arc of descending further into darkness. Upon revealing the truth about his sister to Camus, he sheds his calm exterior and attacks with his full power, declaring he needs no friends or family. In the final battle between them, Camus awakens his God Cloth and defeats Surtr with the Aurora Execution. In his last moments, his armor shattered, Surtr appears to attempt an apology, but he ultimately perishes alongside Camus as his chamber collapses. He is later seen in the epilogue among the surviving God Warriors training the next generation of Asgardian warriors.
As a God Warrior, Surtr possesses immense physical strength and full control over the seventh sense, comparable to a Gold Saint. He is armed with a powerful sword named Lævateinn. His signature ability is the generation of blue flames, which he uses in techniques such as Flame Deer Maelstrom, where he creates a powerful fiery vortex, and Hatred Blue Flame, a devastating attack that engulfs his opponent in furious azure fire. His God Robe, Eikþyrnir, is named after a mythical stag from Norse mythology that stands atop Valhalla, and its design resembles a stag beetle or deer.
