Description
Hércules de Tanngrisnir is a God Warrior serving under Andreas Rize, the self-proclaimed representative of Odin in the earthly realm of Asgard, appearing in the anime Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold. He is one of the seven new God Warriors who protect the cosmic tree Yggdrasill, specifically tasked as the guardian of its chamber known as Jotunheim, the realm of the ice giants from Norse mythology. Standing at approximately 2.20 meters tall, Hércules is an exceptionally large and muscular man with brown hair that reaches his shoulders. His God Robe is predominantly green with yellow accents and features fur in place of an armored skirt, and he carries a powerful weapon named Mjöllnir, which resembles a large sword or lance that can separate into two parts to generate energy waves.

The character presents a fascinating blend of mythological influences. His name derives from the Greek hero Heracles, son of Zeus, known for his twelve impossible labors and immense physical strength. However, his attributes and equipment strongly connect to Thor, the Norse god of thunder. His God Robe is named Tanngrisnir, meaning "teeth grinder," one of the two magical goats that pulled Thor's chariot, while his weapon shares its name with Thor's legendary hammer, Mjöllnir. This duality reflects the historical comparison drawn by the Roman historian Tacitus, who equated Thor with Hercules due to their shared associations with strength, power, arrogance, and gluttony, as well as their battles against serpentine monsters like Jörmungandr and the Hydra.

In terms of personality, Hércules is a warrior of contradictions. He possesses immense confidence in his brute strength, which is described as the greatest among the new God Warriors. He is honorable in some respects yet cruel in battle, driven by an obsessive need to prove his superiority against worthy adversaries. This obsession with raw power becomes his defining flaw and a central theme of his character. During his final confrontation with the Taurus Gold Saint, Aldebaran, Hércules reveals that he had forgotten what it felt like to care for and protect others, having convinced himself that physical strength was the only power that truly mattered. His arrogance proves to be a significant disadvantage, as he becomes easily overwhelmed in situations that might require creative solutions rather than sheer force.

Hércules first appears challenging Libra Dohko at the Asgardian colosseum, but Aldebaran volunteers to fight in his place. Initially viewing this as an opportunity to test whose strength was greater, Hércules resorts to underhanded tactics when Aldebaran gains the upper hand, deliberately directing an attack toward innocent spectators. Aldebaran saves the crowd, which partially awakens his God Cloth. Later, after receiving an Odin Sapphire that amplifies his power, Hércules faces Aldebaran again at Jotunheim. In this rematch, he abandons his weapon Mjöllnir, making the battle even more difficult for himself. When defeat becomes certain, he attempts to exploit Aldebaran's caring nature one last time, tricking the Gold Saint into being caught by Yggdrasill's roots. Watching Aldebaran use his final strength to destroy the chamber's statue rather than save himself, Hércules admits to finding this selfless act deeply admirable.

His combat abilities center on harnessing his extraordinary physical power. His primary techniques include Ruota Falce, where he launches the two wheels on his God Robe's shoulders using Mjöllnir as a lever, and Ruota Tornado, which spins these wheels to generate a devastating tornado. His role in the story serves as a foil to Aldebaran, representing the path of strength without compassion, contrasted against the Gold Saint who fights to protect others. Through this rivalry, Hércules experiences a moment of recognition before the end, acknowledging the value of a power greater than brute force.
