TV-Series
Description
Erika Karisawa is a resident of Ikebukuro and a close associate of the courier group that includes Kyouhei Kadota, whom she often affectionately calls Dotachin, as well as her frequent companion, Walker Yumasaki. Standing 160 centimeters tall with a birthday on November 3rd, she has brown eyes and brown hair, typically styled in a braid down her back with two pieces framing her face. Her distinctive and consistent outfit consists of a black newsboy cap, a black Chinese cheongsam with long sleeves, and black ankle boots, and she carries a small silver shoulder bag.
Her background before the events of the series is deliberately obscure, but it is implied that she had a dark past involved with criminal organizations. Kyouhei Kadota is credited with pulling her and Walker away from that life and helping them reintegrate into normal society, which is the foundation of her deep loyalty to him. She was formerly a member of a gang called the Blue Squares but followed Kyouhei without hesitation when he decided to leave, accepting any potential consequences. Shortly after, she also followed him in becoming a member of the anonymous online gang known as the Dollars.
Erika is an extremely enthusiastic fan of anime, manga, and light novels, making her a quintessential otaku. This passion is the core of her personality and colors nearly every aspect of her life. She works as a freelancer, creating and selling handmade accessories and cosplay patterns online to support herself, and she also enjoys cosplaying as a hobby. Her identity as a fujoshi, a fan of romantic male relationships in fiction, is very pronounced. She is famously convinced that the bitter and violent rivalry between Shizuo Heiwajima and Izaya Orihara is, in fact, a sign of deep romantic affection, a pairing she actively supports. She sees romantic potential between other men around her as well, such as between Kyouhei and a rival gang member named Chikage.
Her overtly hyper and strange personality, however, conceals a much darker and more pragmatic side. When the situation calls for information extraction, Erika and her partner Walker are both highly skilled in psychological and physical torture. Their methods are disturbingly methodical, often forcing their victim to choose a manga theme, which they then use as the basis for their interrogation techniques. She herself has stated a belief that her affinity for such cruelty is an innate part of her nature that would exist regardless of her love for fiction. Despite these sadistic capabilities, she is fiercely protective of her friends. When Kyouhei is brutally injured and hospitalized, she demonstrates genuine distress and later swears a cold and malicious vengeance against the perpetrator.
Erika is rarely seen without her best friend and partner, Walker Yumasaki. Their shared obsession with anime and manga makes them an inseparable and eccentric duo. While they are similar in many ways, Erika is often portrayed as the more socially adept and emotionally grounded of the two, capable of calming Walker down when he becomes agitated. She has lived with her younger brother, named Hunter, in an apartment, indicating a home life separate from her adventures with the group.
Her key relationships are central to her role. She is utterly loyal to Kyouhei Kadota, the leader and moral center of their group, viewing him as the person who saved her from her past. Along with Kyouhei and Walker, she is also close friends with Saburo Togusa, who drives the group's van. Erika also develops a significant friendship with Anri Sonohara. After learning about Anri's connection to the supernatural sword Saika, Erika and Walker become intensely curious. Over time, this curiosity evolves into genuine camaraderie, with Erika attempting to get Anri into cosplay and staunchly defending her when Izaya Orihara verbally attacks her, declaring herself Anri's friend.
During the events of Durarara!!×2 Ten, Erika's loyalty and her darker side come into sharp focus. When Kyouhei is the victim of a hit-and-run and left in a coma, she immediately rushes to the hospital and remains there as much as possible. Her pain quickly turns into a cold and calculated fury, and she vows to personally kill the person responsible for hurting her friend. This arc highlights that beneath her humorous and fanatical exterior lies a devoted and potentially ruthless individual.
In terms of abilities, aside from her interrogation skills, Erika is resourceful and quick-thinking. She is an adept seamstress and craftsperson, able to make detailed cosplay outfits and accessories. She also possesses a strong talent for blending in when necessary, once using a pair of red contact lenses meant for cosplay to impersonate members of a brainwashed mob to move through them safely.
