Description
Izumo Kusanagi is a central figure within the Red Clan, HOMRA, serving as its second-in-command, primary strategist, and the owner of the bar that serves as the group's headquarters, also named HOMRA. As a young man, he moved from his native Kyoto to Tokyo for high school, living with his uncle Mizuomi, who owned a bar. It was during this time that he began working at the bar and formed a deep, lifelong friendship with Mikoto Suoh, the future Red King. Their bond was later strengthened when they encountered a persistent middle school student named Tatara Totsuka, who, after a period of following them, was hospitalized following an assault. Though Kusanagi initially warned Totsuka to stay away for his own safety, the young man eventually joined their circle, becoming a part-time bartender. Following his uncle's death, Kusanagi inherited the bar and made it the Red Clan's permanent base.

Physically, Kusanagi is a tall and slender man, standing 188 centimeters tall with dirty blonde hair and hazel eyes. His clan insignia is located on his right shoulder blade. A notable and constant feature of his appearance since the age of twenty-four is a pair of black-framed sunglasses with purple lenses. His typical attire consists of a white collared shirt, a red or black scarf, an open black jacket, blue jeans, and distinctive black shoes with white accents.

Kusanagi is defined by his calm, composed, and rational personality, often reacting to dangerous or chaotic situations with a level of patience that others find intimidating. He speaks with a thick Kyoto dialect, is an avid smoker, and is known as a womanizer, openly flirting with young women and having been in many past relationships. His maturity and stabilizing presence within the impulsive and sometimes violent Red Clan have earned him the nickname the mother of HOMRA from official sources, as he frequently listens to problems, scolds members when necessary, and works to maintain internal peace. Despite his easygoing nature, he has a well-known and volatile temper that emerges when his beloved bar or its contents, particularly the counter, are damaged, revealing a fierce protectiveness for the space that represents home for his clan.

Kusanagi is the owner and bartender of HOMRA bar, which serves as the clan's economic backbone and central meeting place. He also operates as an underground informant, using a network of contacts from his involvement in what are described as shady business dealings to gather extensive knowledge on people and events. As the right-hand man to the Red King, Mikoto Suoh, he is the second strongest member of the clan, though he generally prefers dialogue and diplomacy over direct conflict. When combat is necessary, his primary ability involves using his signature Zippo lighter and the ashes of his lit cigarette as a catalyst for his red aura, creating small balls of fire that can home in on targets and explode on contact. His combat style is suited for ranged attacks, and he is also physically strong, capable of subduing rowdy clan members with ease.

The narrative sees Kusanagi acting as the steady force behind HOMRA, watching over its members, including younger ones like Misaki Yata and newcomer Shōhei Akagi, and mediating disputes. He is a caretaker to the young Anna Kushina, the clan's future leader. Following the death of his king and longtime friend Mikoto Suoh, Kusanagi experienced profound grief, temporarily disbanding HOMRA, entrusting Anna to another member, and leaving Tokyo. Learning of Anna's kidnapping by the Green Clan during a period of instability was the catalyst for his return. He played a crucial role in the ensuing conflict, assisting in her rescue and helping to reassure her, which was a key factor in her transition into becoming the new Red King, an event that restored the bonds between the former clan members. Demonstrating his resourcefulness and ongoing dedication to protecting his clan, particularly Anna, he later traveled to Dresden, Germany, to investigate the Dresden Slate, the source of the Kings' power, collaborating with Seri Awashima of the rival clan Scepter 4 to search for vital information.
