Description
Hibiki Tokai is a young man from the planet Taraak, where he was designated a low-ranking third-class citizen and worked as a mechanic in a Vanguard factory. Frustrated with the lack of respect he received and dreaming of a better life, he made a rash decision to steal a humanoid combat mecha known as a Vanguard, an act that inadvertently led to his capture by female pirates from the rival planet Mejeer and set the course of his subsequent journey.
At the outset, Hibiki is loud, stubborn, immature, and cocky, often prone to showing off and acting without considering the consequences. He is depicted as a prideful individual who bitterly resents his low social standing but harbors a fierce determination to prove his own existence and worth. Despite his hot-headed nature, he possesses innate leadership qualities and a strong sense of honor, refusing to back down from a fight even when the odds are against him. His bold and confident words have a notable effect on those around him, often helping to boost the morale of his teammates in difficult situations. Hibiki also demonstrates a keen tactical instinct, frequently devising the battle plans and clever schemes that the crew of the Nirvana uses to overcome their enemies, such as turning a gas planet into a star to destroy an enemy fleet.
Hibiki's role in the story is that of the male protagonist and the primary vanguard pilot for the pirate ship Nirvana. After being exposed to a mysterious energy source called the Paksis, his Vanguard gains the ability to combine with the combat mecha, or Dreads, of three of the female pilots. These combined forms are known as Vandreads, and Hibiki is the key pilot who enables this fusion, making him central to the crew's combat effectiveness. His personal mecha is distinguishable by a unique scratch mark on its chest armor, a mark he himself made during its production.
His most significant relationship is with Dita Liebely, a novice pilot whose relentless and affectionate pursuit he initially finds annoying, often running away from her and yelling at her to leave him alone. Over time, however, he grows accustomed to her presence, develops a fondness for her cooking, and eventually falls in love with her. The other crew members observe this budding romance with great interest. He also forms important bonds with others aboard the ship, including the other male crewmates Duelo McFile and Bart Garsus. His care for the crew becomes evident in moments of crisis, such as silently mourning the apparent loss of a comrade or taking action to ensure another does not feel useless.
Throughout the series, Hibiki undergoes significant development, maturing from a rash and insecure young man into a stronger, more responsible individual. His existence becomes recognized and validated by the people around him, and he finds the proof of his worth he had always been seeking. His courage and resolve reach their peak when he demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice his own life to protect the crew he has come to value as family. It is ultimately revealed that his background is far more significant than his third-class status suggested, as he is the son of the emperor of Taraak and the empress of Mejeer, having been awakened from a long cryogenic sleep approximately fourteen years before the story begins. As a pilot, his abilities are defined by his considerable skill in close-quarters combat with his Vanguard's sword, his amazing adaptability and quick thinking on the battlefield, and his unique role as the necessary core component for forming the powerful Vandread combinations.
