Description
Meia Gisborn serves as the stoic and highly skilled squadron leader of the Dread Team, the primary fighter pilot unit aboard the pirate ship Nirvana. She is a young woman, nineteen years of age, with a birthday on June 10. Her demeanor is initially defined by a cold and serious exterior, a stark contrast to more exuberant crew members like Dita Liebely. She rarely smiles, with only a few instances seen throughout the series, such as when she cares for an infant or during the final battle. As a leader, she is strict and carries a heavy sense of responsibility, always keeping a close watch on the safety of her fellow pilots and earning the respectful titles of "Leader" or "Chief". Despite her harshness, the crew deeply appreciates her, though she famously dislikes celebrations like surprise birthday parties thrown in her honor.

Meia's fierce independence and initial hatred of men stem from a deeply traumatic past. As a child, a catastrophic failure of her home quadrant's life support systems, which had been personally designed by her Ohma (a term for a female father figure), forced a mass evacuation. In the ensuing chaos, her mother pushed her aboard the last escape ship but was left behind, dying in an explosion that consumed the remaining adults. Her Ohma had already left the family due to a scandal, and this abandonment, combined with the public's blame placed on her parents, left Meia to grow up alone. She became a problem child and a street fighter, living a life of crime and having lost the will to live. Her recruitment as a pirate began when the Nirvana's captain, Magno Vivan, threw her a laser ring and challenged her to die doing something worthwhile. This gave her a new purpose, and she quickly rose through the ranks due to her talent and sharp mind.

Her primary motivation is to prove her own existence and to become strong enough that nothing can ever hurt her again. The journey aboard the Nirvana, which forces her to coexist with men (Tarakuans) who were previously considered enemies, becomes the catalyst for her transformation. Over time, her rigid hatred for men softens, particularly through her interactions with Hibiki Tokai. Although she never openly admits to romantic feelings, he becomes the only male she does not hate outright, and she develops a deep bond of respect with him, noticing the similarities in their fiery spirits and shared desire to matter. Captain Magno even comments on how similar in temperament and personality Meia and Hibiki are.

A key character trait is that she suffers from claustrophobia, a condition known to very few others on the ship. She also holds onto mementos from her past, including a jewelry box that was a Christmas gift from her Ohma, a metallic headpiece she was allowed to keep, and a family photo she repaired by taping her Ohma's head back into place. These items signify her eventual, painful journey toward coming to terms with her parents' abandonment and death, learning to accept that their love for her was real and that she can pass that love forward.

Regarding her combat abilities, Meia pilots a silver Dread, which is noted as the fastest unit in the Nirvana's fleet. When her Dread merges with Hibiki's Vanguard, they form the Vandread Meia-type, also known as the "White Wing". This transformed mecha resembles a silver eagle and specializes in high-speed attacks, with its primary offensive maneuver being a devastating high-velocity ram that can pierce through nearly any enemy unit. When not in her mecha, her personal weapon is the laser ring given to her by Captain Magno on the day they met. Throughout the story, she evolves from a closed-off, emotionally wounded loner into a more open and caring individual who fights not just for survival, but to protect the future of her companions.
