Description
Kiddy Phenil is a former detective from the Neo-Tokyo Police Force and a central member of the Attacked Mystification Police, or AMP, the specialized unit formed to combat the interdimensional beings known as the Lucifer Hawks. Originally from Australia, she served as a regular police officer before a catastrophic encounter with a rogue megadyne cyborg named Wire left her with devastating injuries. In order to save her life, doctors replaced approximately seventy percent of her body with advanced cybernetic prosthetics, transforming her into a combat cyborg. This event is the defining trauma of her existence, as she is forced to live in a body that shares the same technology as the individual who nearly killed her, a fact she initially despises.
Kiddy is best known for her fierce, headstrong, and impulsive nature, possessing a notoriously short fuse and a brusque exterior that often masks her more vulnerable side. Her personality is a classic example of a tsundere archetype, frequently displaying aggression and a lack of femininity while harboring deep-seated insecurities and a desire for normalcy. She struggles with a complex about her cyborg body and the artificial skin that covers it, feeling alienated from conventional experiences like dating or wearing makeup. Despite her gruff demeanor, she holds a strong sense of justice and is deeply loyal to her comrades. Her habits can be unusual for someone with her power; for instance, she has a tendency to sleepwalk, or more accurately, sleep-fight, which poses a significant danger to anyone nearby due to her immense strength. She is also notably messy, keeping a living space that reflects a lack of concern for domestic tidiness.
Within the AMP, Kiddy occupies the role of a big sister figure. As one of the founding members, her considerable experience, accurate judgment, and steady combat ability have earned her the trust of both her team leader Rally Cheyenne and her fellow officers. Because of her history with the regular police, she is often entrusted with handling field negotiations and liaising with conventional law enforcement, who are frequently mistrustful of the AMP's unconventional methods. Her primary motivations are rooted in protection. She channels her hatred for her cyborg body into a determination to use that same strength to shield the people she cares about from harm.
Her most significant relationship begins with Ralph Bombers, a police officer from another department. Their initial encounters are highly confrontational, marked by mutual distrust and physical conflict. Ralph is one of the few individuals who treats her as an equal, unafraid of her despite her obvious power, which eventually evolves from antagonism into respect and love. Their romance becomes a central part of her personal development, allowing her to gradually accept her body as a tool for protection rather than viewing it solely as a curse. Equally important is her close friendship with fellow AMP member Katsumi Liqueur. Despite initial mistrust, they become inseparable, even living together after Katsumi’s home is destroyed. This bond is tested when Katsumi is possessed by the malevolent demon sword Medium, but Kiddy’s loyalty remains absolute.
Kiddy undergoes significant development throughout the story, evolving from a woman who hates her mechanized body to one who accepts it as an integral part of herself. The climax of her character arc occurs when she confronts the possessed Katsumi. Understanding that her friend must be freed from the demon's control, Kiddy deliberately provokes Katsumi, allowing herself to be stabbed through the chest. She is willing to die to save her friend, but her cyborg systems place her into a stasis instead. Ralph is faced with the decision to let her remain as she is or authorize a further operation that would raise her body’s cybernetic ratio to nearly ninety percent, allowing her to rejoin the final battle. He consents, and she returns to fight alongside the AMP. After the final conflict with the entity known as Nemesis, Kiddy and Ralph marry, finding a peaceful resolution after a life of combat.
As a cyborg, Kiddy’s abilities are formidable. Her primary asset is her superhuman strength and speed, which allow her to engage in devastating hand-to-hand combat and surprise the Lucifer Hawks, who do not expect such power from a human. Unlike some of her teammates who rely on magic or sorcery, Kiddy uses brute physical force and advanced technology, her main weapon being a Graviton Pistol. Her combat style is direct and aggressive, using her bionic limbs to stop demons head-on while her more magically inclined colleagues prepare their spells. Her body is equipped with a life support system that can keep her alive even after catastrophic physical trauma, as demonstrated when she was stabbed by the Medium, proving that her transformation has granted her a terrifying degree of resilience.
